6 months ago we purchased a pair of orange breasted finches, two weeks later some idiot forgot to close the aviary properly, luckily for that idiot only one bird left home. just happened to be the male. the female was sitting on 4 fertile eggs at the time but she gave up shortly after. it took until 3 days ago to find another male for her. little buggers are already building a nest though. and yes the idiot ( I admit it, it was me) has made the aviary safe, now have to go through two doors to get into the flight.

great links robert thank you.
looks like I need to get a copy of that finch encyclopedia on estrildid finches, so that I can get the names right, after reading through the links it appears that what I was told by a breeder were orange breasted may actually be gold breasted. doesnt really matter to much, hey are great looking birds and swmbo (she who must be obeyed) is happy

Hey Mick the most important aspect into keeping finchs is having a safety door to prevent escapees. We used to have an aviary when i was younger with a large door and didnt have a safety door and lost quite a few zebs and at another time lost some peachfaces that way too. so your not the only one. lesson learnt absolutely well kind of.
