I'm considering a finch and neophema aviary. I love like really love the gouldians. They would be the basis of the aviary that I would work around. The aviary I'm looking at is 2.5 m X 1.2 m. What would work in the way of species and also considering the space that I'm looking at. This is more a pretty aviary where I'm not so concerned about handraising and breeding. Cockatiels would be the neighbours, but can easily double wire if needs be.

in an aviary that size i would stick to either a few pairs of finches or neophemas, you will also find gouldians and neophemas will fight over the nests! i have one aviary that size and i need to decide to either get rid of the finches or lorikeets its not working!

Hmmm gouldian finches and neophemas breed in different style nest ... i have had all kinds of finches and neophemas in a 6 foot aviary and never had any troubles ... but i lost the gouldians due to draft. *ADDED* If anyone is going to be stealing nests it will be the neophemas ... but even then i didnt have any fighting ... i just lost track of what was what

Is that 23 days since you said "no more this year" Mary? That's alright we're all hopeless cases here and know that 'no more birds' only means in the next 5 mins Sounds like a great idea, I love finches and neos and the tiels would be no probs as neighbours. I can say on the neophema front that they are generally very peaceful (elegants excepted) but the boys get very toey in Spring so even numbers or more hens would be best. Scarlets in particular are abit touchy with wet weather, they seen to be fine with very hot or very cold but any humidity and they'll fluff up and/or drop dead Some people will say don't keep green neos together because they run the risk of hybridising but I'm sure they'd be okay as long as you kept an eye on them and broke up any mis-matches.

Yeahhhh i'd have to say i breed neophemas like crazzzy up in qld (Roma) ..... but had no luck here in sydney ...
Out of 2 pairs of white fronted scarlets , 2 par blue scarlets , 1 pair of bourkes, 1 pair of rosa bourkes and 2 pairs of pink/cream bourkes ... I have 1 pink/cream bourke left ..
Sooo NOOOOOOOOOOOO more for me while leaving here and not having good enough aviaries/cages to keep them in out of the weather ...

Umm. Yeah well, it may not happen until next year. (note to self do not mention any new birds until Jan 2009). I remember the rule with the green neos. Given what Ben hes said I may just go with the finches. I guess I could just do a small colony of Gouldians.

Gouldians often do better when they are with their own kind so I have been told.

I have gouldians in with all diff types of finches and have had no probs at all. one funny thing with my gouldians though is that they wont touch any sort of live food I offer, but when they see a moth in the cage all the other birds need to hide cos the gouldians become kamikaze birds until its caught.
oh I do have one prob with my gouldians,, there's not enough of them

Gouldians are very pretty and there are different colours now too I notice. I once had some finches and gouldians were one type and I found that some of the finches were very territorial. But I cannot remember what the others were as I just bought them at the time because they were "pretty".

A rule of thumb is to have one pair of the peaceful (includes Gouldians) species of finches to one cubic metre of aviary volume. Your suggested aviary size would have around 6 cubic metres of volume assuming it is about 2 metres high, so 6 pairs of finches. If you also want to have a pair of Neophemas allow 3 cubic metres for one pair so it would be one pair of Neophema and 3 pairs of Gouldians.
I can confirm Jane's comments about Scarlet-chested Parrots and humidity. On the Sunshine Coast they are difficult to keep anywhere that gets a sea breeze but away from the coast can do quite well.
cheers,
Mike

I'm thinking I'll just get 2 pairs of Gouldians. It's going to be awhile before it happens so chances are it may not be until next year. (na na na I probably won't break my bird thing ) Hubby still needs to get the other 6 berth up which includes the concrete slab and still clearing the area properly, and then I'll have to work on the finch aviary to make sure it's finch proof. This will mean checking for gaps they may get through, lining the aviary and getting some plants groing in pots ready to go in with them. I'll probably also try and work out some kind of blind for the exposed southerly side. With him working some really long hours atm and of course taking the necessary trailbike sojourns it could take awhile. I have said I'd like the other one up by July ready for South American breeding season. As for the Gouldians, I really like the normals. Love the little black faces with the beautiful colourings.

In my back aviary at one stage I had a pair of Red Rumps, Bourkes & Gouldians all breeding. The Red Rumps & Bourkes likes the higher nest boxes and the Gouldians liked the lower ones. I had a problem with the second pair of Red Rumps - the hen went rogue and killed some others. This second pair are removed from the aviary. So now, there are 1 pair of breeding Red Rumps, female Bourke has just started sitting in the other nest box and the Gouldian hen is starting to make eyes at the remaining male Gouldian.

I have 2 pairs of goulian, some zebs, double bars and a pair of rosa burkes all living hapily in one avairy, which is about 6ft sq. they are all happy and the zebs and burkes have bought babies out and the golians are sitting at the moment. havent had any luck with the doublebars yet but time will tell i guess!!

Lovely to see you have double-bars,Gooka.Hope they breed for you. While they will never win the prize in terms of outward beauty, they are such a delightfull finch in terms of their behavour. They are so gentle.Has been known that baby double-bars have been fed by other double-bars apart from their parents. They also love to preen each other. from Robert and Angel
