I have just been playing in my aviary, making the most of the break in the weather, when I discovered a baby quail had hatched. I didn't particularly want baby quails, the mother is always sitting on eggs. The reason being that they always die within 10 days of hatching. I have separated mum and bub into a kitty litter tray with wire on top. Apart from seed and water, what else can I do to ensure the bub doesn't die?

congrats loraine on your new baby!! I have had a few clutches of baby king quails over the last few months and have been lucky enough not to have lost any of them. I think as long as they have seed water (in a dish that isnt too deep so they dont drown) the only other thing they really need to survive is warmth. On saying that, i guess you will just have to keep an eye on them and make sure mum is keeping bub warm. I usually put a little dish with chicken starter crumbles in the bottom of the aviary with the quails. I really don't know if they need them or not but they like them!!!

I'd yeek too Laraine so so many eggs all the time I think you've done the best thing I think the hazards for baby quail are getting lost and the dad killing them. Good Luck and how about a pic
