Ok I have a question for all you tiel breeders. With my platinum pair the male is a platino so there is only 1 lutino gene between them. I have had wflutino chicks and platinums and none have ever had a bald spot. This time round the platino chick has a monster of a bald patch. Now seeing he is carrying the same lutino gene as any wflutino chicks from previous clutches can anyone tell me why he is bald and they weren't? I have heard some say that the bald spot can miss a generation and appear again but this is the same generation. The platino father is not bald and this is the first one that is. Any ideas?? Jo-Anne

Hi Jo i have a full crop of hair so thick it makes me sick yet my 2 younger brothers are nearly bald my point being genes are not always what we think they are.Its highly likely that lutino gene has come thru very strongly on this bird hence the whiter tones of Platino and the question you ask doesn't have a definate answer. The only thing is we try and avoid these scenarios by selective breeding and even then it.s not guaranteed that a great great great great grandfather or grandmothers gene has reared itself at an unopropiate time cheers Frank

I know what you mean about balding in men. Thought maybe there may have been something different involved in birds. So looks like the platino will be sold as a handraised pet...that's ok. Is it safe then to breed with full-feathered siblings of this one or is it better to completely dismiss this line because of this one bald case? I really want to improve or maintain the standard of my birds not go backwards! Jo-Anne

Hi Jo-Anne my comments were related to the different reactions of some genes like in your case, if you are sure that the baldness is genetically related and not a feather plucking issue because you mention a monster of baldness which has the same resemblence then yes i would be moving on with that line :'(cheers Frank P.s send me a photo
