hi, i am possibly about to appear quite ignorant, but could someone pls explain the term opaline to me? Also cinnamon and pied? I have cleverly figured out that lutino is yellow Does lutino have red eyes? Can there be yellow birds that don't have red eyes? Are there any good websites that show good pics of colour mutations? Thanks for bearing with me.

Hi Jms and welcome to the forum.Firstly Genetics can sound very daunting but when studied and read over a few times it does come to hand quite quickly.Basically in Australia there are 2 main types of genetics, the first is a Sex Linked variety where the Sire or in easier terms the dad of the chicks born will produce females that look like him! Then to produce males that look like dad his female partner must look like him also, their are other factors that we wont go into here just yet. Then their is a Recessive variety where both parents must be visually identified or split which means carries a hidden genetic trait to produce offspring the same as Mum & Dad!!Confused yet don't let it bother you.In your questions you ask about Lutino yes they are a Yellowish/White variety. Also their are Yellow birds that are not Lutino's but instead are called clear Pieds and these birds have black eyes and not red ones especially in Cockatiels. Your other question regarding Opaline this is a term used for a scalloping feather pattern efffect on birds wings and back another terminology used for this in Cockatiels is Pearling and Lacewing,Opaline is quite commonly used with Red Rump parrots.Cinnamon is a sex linked color as is Lutino and Pearling and is just that a Cinnamon colored tone. You also mention Pied this is a recessive trait and is usually Identified in Parrots by a double tone of Color change mainly on the back and wings of Parrots.A good specimen of Pied is when the Two tones appear but the Face Chest and Tail feathers remain a clear tone eg all Yellow or all White!! the following link will give you good indications of colors and varieties available in Cockatiels but for namesake quite common thru most parrot species cheers Frank www.justcockatiels.com/mutations_illustrations.htm

Thanks! So opaline, pearl and lacewing are all the same thing? I have heard the term lacewing a lot with ringnecks but sometimes can't see a huge difference in photos. The cockatiel pic makes the pattern quite clear! So if dad is opaline and mum is normal, do I understand correctly that his girl babies will be opaline, and the boys will be normal? If mum is opaline also, are all the babies opaline? Thanks again.

Yes if dad is an opaline and mum is a normal the girls will be opaline.Boys will be normal ,but will splits to opaline. And yes you do need two of the same to produce all same colour sex...and then there is also another way to get same sex colour, but you will also get normals as well...That is that the male is a split and the female is the colour...

Thanks Natalie, I think I get it. If dad is a split and mum is the colour, then would some female babies inherit 2 of the opaline genes, and if so would they appear any different?

It has been a long time since I was right into the genetics of red rumps..But i dont think females can be split to opaline...from what I remember I think they are along the lines of the ring neck genetics...

With Red Rumps if Dad is opaline and Mum is normal then any opaline babies will be hens and the Cockbird babies will be split to Opaline. If Mum and Dad are both Opaline then all the babies will be Opaline but still sexable in the nest, Hens can't be split in Red Rumps. John
