Hi folks, Just thought I’d share these links on care and genetics. They are by no means recent and those into genetics and budgies would no doubt have already found these pages. The first link is a very well written and comprehensive online book on budgerigar care and breeding (no genetics info in this site). Whilst the information is directed at the budgie breeder, it is also just as relevant to those with interest in other parrot species. The text appears to be a bit heavy going at times. www.tuxford.dabsol.co.uk/masterbreeder/contents.htmThe second link explains colour mutations, why they occur and how the different genes interact to produce the colours and colour tones. The information is meant to include all bird species and some of the genes may not be relevant to parrots, but are nevertheless part of the greater picture on how colours change. This particular set of articles is written by Terry Martin who authored the “A Guide to …” book on the genetics of colour. www.birdhobbyist.com/parrotcolour/terry/buckley.htmlIf you follow the links from this site to the main page, there are numerous other articles on the genetics of colour. Again, these articles although intended for a general audience, uses language that may require prior background knowledge and understanding of terms . Cheers, Giovanni
