I have a small aviary that is sitting empty at the moment it is 1mtr by 1mtr by 2.8mtrs tall I was looking at making it a selective breeding cage and would like to place a pair of 'tiels in it just for breeding. My question is, is it big eneough? and if so is there anything I should be doing to encourage them to breed? How many boxes should i put in there. What are your thoughts here everyone?. I would also like your opinions on breeding season for 'Tiels, some say they will breed all year around? I have also been told that i should restrict the breeding season to spring/summer.

Hi John,
Pitty it was not on the side with the hight beening lenth wise..I would only put one pair of tiels in there one box..I breed in late autam, and spring...beening the weather warmer up here,we can start a bit earlyer..Summer is just to hot..and yes they would breed all year round if you did let them..not good for them as well...Teils are normaly easy to breed just add box lol...But as you know they have to be in peck form as well...

Hi John mother hen hit the nail on the head too many negatives breeding thru winter not enough daylight hours for starters and of course the temp range will kill anything if they abandon the nest for a short period in the northern states it's not so much of a problem and your aviari if you could lay it on it's side and give it some legs would be perfect for 1 Pair with 1 box cheers Frank

If you are going to start breeding, you'd better set them up soon. Depending where you are of course. I have had big problems with the heat if I let the birds breed after Christmas. Its simply too hot for them. The adult birds get exhausted, and chicks suffer from heat stress.
I agree with the others that putting the cage on its side would be better, but in actuality a good pair of tiels will pretty much breed anywhere and in anything!
Also if you want to breed soon, try and find an existing breeing pair, or two unknown birds that are showing strong breeding tendancies. Shy birds will take longer to bond, and you can also have problems where the birds simply don't like each other. Also make sure that the birds are in good condition as my non-breeders have already started their summer moult, so others birds may have also.

Hi Everyone, I agree with Claire, don't wait too long, the temp in my part of Kempsey reached 38 on thursday. I spent nearly the whole day trying to keep the Birds and their offspring cool, It's much too early for this weather!! Cheers...Tony

Hi John, As this is my first season at breeding tiels, I can't offer you much help but the info that has been headed your way sounds pretty accurate. I will wish you all the best though. It took my two a few weeks to settle in and get used to each other before the eggs were started to be incubated. Good Luck Kazz
