Hi Guys,
Well the WFPlatnium hen sure must be a dud - her second nest of clear eggs.
Her mate a WF Pd/?C &/ ?Prl is a nice big male and I was hoping to put him with my lovelly new Cin-Pastelface-Pl/everything hen to see what they are split to.
My question is - I know to let hens rest after a few nests - but what about males? He has sired three nests this season already - all no good, to two different hens, therefore no chicks. Can I put him down again with another hen or give him time to rest?

Hi Claire if he hasn't raised young then he should be fine but you did say he has been to 2 different hens and 3 nests with no fertile eggs? If that is correct either this guy is not mating properly (is he under !8mths)or he is infertile what makes you think the Wf Plat hen is a Dud?cheers Frank

ooops sorry Frank! The first nest was a good clutch of 4 fertile eggs (with a lutino hen). The hen on that nest ceased sitting hence the chicks were DIS at 2 weeks. The next two nests was with the Platinium WF hen - both clutches (one of 5 the next of three) were both clear. I always open up any discarded eggs to see at what stage the eggs died and if they were fertile and what was inside. When I bought the WF hen the guy said "I haven't had any luck with her" and maybe I would. She is a few years old. The cock is at least 18 months old. They are unrelated. You may recall me talking about the WF pair before - they mated seriously for three weeks before producing any eggs. Thanks for your answer though . I'll let them settle for a few days and then try introducing him to the pastelface hen. Kinda rushing it so I can get in before the serious hot weather hits. Cheers, Claire

Thats fine Claire and it explains very well that obviously the male is fertile and knows how to produce re his 1st clutch of fertile eggs it's disappointing that the Platinum Wf didn't produce for you, having said that next time she is ready to mate might pay to clear some feathers around her cloaca as sometimes not very often i might add it can interupt copulation before giving up on her fertility cheers Frank

Cheers for the feather-trimming tip. The platnium WF is back in the holding aviary and the PF and WF are now together. They've been in and out of the box all day and the WF cock is singing and trying to mount the hen already. What a man!!
