Hi Deb, It really shouldn't be a problem, a lot depends on how the hen reacts, and how greedy the 5 day old is, just keep an eye on the younger chicks to make sure their getting fed. Ive had and have now chicks that have hatched way behind the others and they all seem to be fed, sometimes the larger chicks size can be a concern too, keep an eye on that, but they all seem to manage somehow ;D. Hope this helps. Tony

Hi Deb, He may try to get all the feed but that is not always the case. I had 3 hatch in 1 clutch. There was 4 days between the 1st and the 3rd. The parents do generally make sure all babies get well fed. I did end up hand raising the eldest from 2 weeks old, as the youngest wasn't getting quite enough.
I would keep a very close eye on them if I were you. If you find that the eldest chick always has a full crop but the little ones don't, then you might need to consider hand rearing the eldest one. One thing that may help. Frank(Hillcrest Tiels) put me onto "Soluvet" Soluble vitamins, salts and energy supplement. Reccommended for clutches of 4/5 chicks. Makes sure even the smallest chicks get the nutrients they need to grow up big and strong.
All the best and let me know you go.
Kazz

Hi Chickabee it shouldn't pose a threat sometimes it is advantageous as the oldest becomes a form of heating for the younger chicks. Sounds like if the other 2 are Pipping that your 2nd egg which was due Tuesday if the 1st was born Sunday might not have survived cheers Frank

Thanks Guys I went out at lunch time to check on the newbie and he has tucker in his crop.....so looks like he got a feed ;D The first little guy is a piggy his crop was packed for a holiday.......mun and dad are doing a great job....... I checked the eggs that were piping and there were signs of a wee hole on one, so I should have another out tomorrow. Hey frank, you do no ya stuff ;D ;D when I checked the eggs today I held one up to the sun & it is infertile, the other two had pips...you were right, that would have been the tuesday egg............so if a chick hatches out friday will that mean the last will hatch Sunday ;D Hey Kazz/Frank where can I get that Soluvet from....vets or petshop? sound like something I should keep on hand just in case. Thank for the help.....will let you no how they go. Deb

Well done Deb and if you want big strong healthy chicks now is the time to feed those sprouts. From late August to Xmas I feed at 6am 7 days a week rain or hail and even then breeders are on the wire waiting for me they will also appreciate a slice of wholemeal bread in the mornings to help feed hungry chicks cheers and goodluck Frank

yep this is the best......but I never thought that I would end up with sooooo many chicks this time......my poor hubby Mike is worried because he said don't get too attached and don't name them.....6 birds in four cages in our loungroom is quiet enough, no more my problem is that I do get attached......I love their little bald heads, stumpy wings, and big tummy's.....and to watch them grow into beautiful tame birds..... ok frank....sprouts sounds good......I'll get some straight away........the bread I gave them was whole grain......they devoured it all Kazz....I'm picking up some Soluvet today. still have six eggs to hatch...there was pipping coming from one in each box...... Will keep you all posted......Deb

Hi Deb, sounds like you are on a bit of a roll at the moment.
I have to agree with you about the babies though. They are so cute with their bulging tummies ;D
Let us kow how the rest of your eggs go and what colours the babies turn out to be.
