Gee you have to watch these tiels there quick....... after the big broods they just all had, I decided to rest them up early, I had removed all the nest boxes but one and when the last chick left I was about to remove that one as well, but you guessed it there was one single new egg.....and on inspection this morning there are five eggs again. I have a sneeking suspecion that one of the other females has layed some eggs as well. My question: if two females layed eggs, will the odd female out just forget the nest or will the brood pair let her in the box as well.

I did that last year, I had one nest box left with one egg which hatched, but one of the males killed the chick and kicked the hen who's nest box it was out, him and his mate then proceeded to raised there own chicks in there..And now I'm not game to remove any of the boxes untill I can get that last one..And do you think I can..I have one nest box which has 4 hens, mom and her three daughter that are now 5 months old, there all sitting on each other, I cant see the bottom to see if there are any eggs or chicks. I'm desparate to get the boxes out as they have all had three clutches now, but I have a couple of two week old chicks, so I'm not game to move anything..

Hi Chickabee unfortunately with colony breeding these are the problems that will arise. If two hens have laid in the same box it's highly likely that there will be ongoing quarrels and disturbances which is not good for the well being of the birds, with hot weather around i would be inclined to let all lay there eggs and remove the box after the hens have finished laying especially if they are on their 3rd clutches,if you see that they get on Ok then maybe you can leave them cheers Frank

Hi Frank, all of the birds get along surprisingly well, they may have a small tiff but there has never been any full on blues. All the tiels only had one clutch this season but because I had that feather plucking female I had to put her babies in with other broods which gave them 6 chicks each. I'll watch the evening change over shift and see who goes in for the night sit and see if there are any fights. If there are no fights and too many eggs can I reduce the number of eggs and how many should I leave.

Update on the multi brood.
final count on viable eggs was 6, it looks like that the same pair are doing all the nesting but have noticed that one other female hangs around the box, but she does not seem to interfear at all. Eggs should be ready to start hatching by this weekend, will be interesting to see how the other girl reacts when there are babies in the box. Will also be interesting to see the chicks colourings, think they will be a mixed bunch ;D

Hi Frank, yep I checked them, they are all viable, I'm waiting till saturday to do a nest peek, the eggs have to be from different hens because they were all layed over a few days, I was going to remove this last nest box after the last baby fledged but on checking the box there was one egg and in the afternoon there was another egg, all the eggs were layed too quick for one hen. There arrival date is this weekend ;D

Hi Frank, I had taken the older baby out to check him over, thats when I noticed the single egg, and it was later that day there was a second, yes I agree that the first egg may have been layed the day before, but the following day there were four eggs in total and then the next day I checked there were six, thats why I think it was the second female. The pair for this box are a normal and a cinnamon, don't know their parentage the other female is ?? i'll attach her photo. I checked the box this morning and there is pipping so there will be chicks today sorry Frank but i'm not up on all the colours for tiels, I just love my birds for what they are and I let them have one nesting each season. didn't want them to have a second lot but thats all a bit late now LOL

Hi Deb the hen in the photo is a Pearl Pied and why i asked about the eggs is it's amazing how they will bury eggs sometimes for preservation especially if thick pine shavings are used only to surface at later dates sometimes i have to sieve thru shavings to find them for Identification from what you say I wouldn't be surprised if they are from the one pair. If the male is a normal and doesn't carry other genes all chicks born will be normal if something else pops up it will a factor that dad and possibly mum carry goodluck with them cheers Frank

Hi Frank, yep I see what you mean about them hiding the eggs, but I did a material change since there was going to be a new nesting and at the time there were only the two eggs that I put back in. So the other girl is a pearl pied ;D your a wizz Frank, thanks for that Any way all I hope for is nice healthy babies, the colour will be a bonus but interesting to see what turns up. last year they gave me my indoor girl Merry and she is a Lutino and a little daring ;D Will keep you posted on what developes......Deb

Your normal grey male would be split to lutino then if you got one from their last clutch. You will know when they hatch that any lutinos will be hens. Please keep us updated on what colours they end up with! Jo-Anne

Congrats Deb on your new babies. If you get a cinnamon baby as well, that also means the dad if he is the normal must be split for cinnamon as well & the mum is a visual cinnamon? or is it the other way around? Cheers Anna
