Hello all,
I am wanting to start breeding my budgies (colony breeding at this stage I think). I have 6 pair and 5 boxes, should I get more and if so, how many per pair do I need?
Have I missed the breeding season for this year or am I still okay to try?
When I put them in the aviary is it okay to put them on the bottom (not the floor), the aviary is suspended. I don't have anywhere to hang them at the moment, still trying to work out how I can attach them to wire.

Sorry, just re-read that,
When I put THE BREEDING BOXES in the aviary it should read.

Depending on the size of wire I use those little anodized picture frame hooks to hang the boxes up for my tiels and would be ample for budgie boxes. In most states the season is only just starting so you haven't miss the boat and i would definately put more boxes than pairs if possible and as high as possible cheers Frank

Do you have a picture of those hooks that you could possibly show me, and how do they attach to the box??
I'll get some more boxes tomorrow (the shop just up the road got a heap in yesterday, hopefully he's still got some left). Today I went outside to change their water and came back in 3 hours later, lol, I just sat there watching them for 3 whole hours, absolutely fascinating creatures. We also looked (only looked mind!!!) at cockatiels today, they're such beautiful birds too. However, I want to master the art of budgie breeding again (we did it for about 2 years but stopped 8 years ago when me moved interstate).
Thanks for your help

Hi Shelley they are those little 10mm picture frame hooks you can purchase at any harware store-Bunnings etc. They are self tapping meaning you can screw then directly on the back of the box at each end on the top wire side.

Hi Shelly, with 6 breeding pairs I would definaetly put in a couple of spare boxes. Budgies can be buggers for fighting over which nest box they want to breed in & will inflict quite a bit of damage to each other. Keep a close eye on them & be ready with some Betadine just in case. It may take them a while to settle down as to which box they want. Cheers Anna

hello Shelly in regards to budgies they will breed all year round so put your boxes in at any time as far as boxes goes i would work on 3 boxes for every 2 pairs and i personally have a shelf in the Avery and just stack the boxes on it for them hope this helps regards bill

Once the birds discover the boxes and mate (saw this happening yesterday, silly me thought they did it inside the box itself), how long till eggs start appearing usually?
I understand it takes about 21 days or so to hatch but just want to give the kids an approximate number of days till we get eggs (that's if they mate successfully I know!!)

Anywhere between 3-7 days squitzy even if mating is not sucessful a hen can lay infertile eggs goodluck I,m sure the kids will love it. just a little note if the eggs are fertile which you can check after 4-5 days of full time incubation with a strong pen light or similar torch you can show the kids the blood veins which will be visible leading to the embryo if you look very closely after 10 days you will notice the embryo which is now larger its heart will be pumping and a very rewarding sight for the kids! cheers Frank
