Hi, My scarlet chested parrots are trying to breed. This is first breeding for them and me. I saw their first mating about two weeks ago, but she has not lay eggs yet. Normally how long does it take from first mating to laying egg? Cheers!

Hi Okan, normally for the smaller birds if you have seen them mating & put in a nest box it is about a week to when they start laying their first egg. But being first time breeders they may take a bit longer as your female is not ready to lay just yet. Just give it a bit more time, as my bourke parrots are still mucking about nearly 4 weeks later. I guess it will happen when it happens & you really can't hurry things up. Hope this helps. Cheers Anna

Thank you, Anna! I have not found any egg yet, but the hen is spending longer time in the next box. Then I will wait for their first egg without hurry. Many thanks

My Bourke Parrots & Turk Parrots are doing the same thing. I caught the Bourkes mating about 4 weeks ago, then found an egg broken on the floor of the cage. The Turk also laid an egg which was eventually broken. They are all first time breeders, so we all have to be patient and keep hoping. I caught the Bourkes mating again yesterday, so here's hoping. They usually spend a lot of time in the box anyway before an egg appears.

My scarlets are mating almost everyday, but no egg yet. I keep hoping, too.

Yei!! I've found their first egg today! I'm happy! But I 'm worry if my nest box inspection disturbs them. Thank you for the advices, Anna & Laraine. How about Anna's bourke? Are Laraine bird sitting on eggs?

Hi, The scarlet hen is sleeping outside the nest box tonight. Is it OK for the first egg? When should she start incubation? She spend less time in the nest box today than before. I'm a bit nervous for the first breeding. Cheers!

Hi Okan, most birds usually don't start incubating till at least the second or third egg is laid so hopefully you will see her spending all her time in the nest box soon. Nope my Bourke's are still mucking about. Might have to put them in a separate cage. They have a lovely brand new breeding box but they are more interested in the tiels boxes grrrr. Thank goodness they are non aggressive birds as one lot of tiels have babies. Oh well live & learn. If I don't get babies from them this year maybe next year LOL when I am better organized with new aviary's. Cheers Anna

Thank you! I could stop worrying. I've found their second egg, too. Tonight she is sleeping in the next box. OH, your bourke's parrots like your cockatiel's nest... Grass parrot's first breeding is difficult, isn't it? I hope success of your birds' breeding! Cheers!

My turk parrot is now sitting on a few eggs. Not sure how many as she doesn't get off when I look in. My Bourke parrots are still dropping their eggs on the floor of the aviary. But I haven't given up hope yet!!!

Bugger about your Bourke parrots Laraine & their eggs. I have taken my Bourke's out of the aviary & will try later. They just wouldn't settle down & my other pair of tiels in the aviary have just hatched babies so thought seeing as they are a new pair I didn't want them abandoning the young. The Bourke's just kept trying to go into the 2 tiels boxes. Oh well I have enough babies on my hands at the moment, so the Bourke's will just have to wait for a bit till I can get them their own cage set up just for them ;D ;D ;D. Cheers Anna

It doesn't seems bourke's breeding is easy. But don't give up! Good luck for Laraine & Anna's bourke breeding!!

Thanks for your kind words Okan. They are gorgeous little birds & I would luv to get babies from them, so when I get a bit more organized I will put them in a separate cage as see how that goes. Cheers Anna

My turk is still sitting on her eggs, I'm a bit anxious as her 2 clutches last year were infertile. Its about 15 days now. I put 2 of the Bourkes discarded eggs from the bottom of the aviary under her too. So am waiting to see what happens.

Hi Laraine, Just a little hint about Bourke's they are a very private bird at breeding time and they are easily spooked. If you have the facility's try giving the Bourke's a bit of privacy put the nest box right up the back of the cage or aviary and isolate them if possible. Hope you have some success with them they are a beautiful bird.
