My female Bourke Parrot is laying her eggs on the floor of the aviary even though there are 2 vacant breeding boxes available. This has happened 3 times now. I think they are fertile as I have seen them mating. The last 2 eggs I have put under my Turk Parrot who is sitting on her own eggs. When I checked her this morning she is happily sitting on all the eggs. I am wondering what will happen if they hatch, will she still feed them if they are "different"? I have 2 questions, why won't she pick a breeding box and how long is an egg viable if not sat on? Both eggs were laid during the day while I was at work and I put them under when I arrived home.

Hello Laraine do you have any logs at all as i have had an experance where the female would only lay in a log i was advised that if i wanted to hold eggs for a little while place them on a bed of budgie mix and turn them at least 3 times a day keeping them in a cool place and i was told 14 days but the longer it is the les chance of survival hope this helps regards bill

Not I! I also thought that without warmth they wouldn't last at all but I learnt my new thing for the day!

I have been told eggs can be viable for up to 14 days, that is just sitting in the nest box, never heard of the budgie seed before

I'll let you know if these Bourke parrot eggs hatch. They were only lying on the floor for a few hours.
