Does anyone on the forum own Scarlet Chested parrots. I'm looking to find out about breeding them. My pair aren't the slightest bit interested in doing anything. I think my hen is laying infertile eggs on the floor of the cage and that's about it.

Hello Laraine, Scarlet Chested parrots are very touchy birds to breed and most of the problems are caused by housing with inadequate protection from the damp or draft. Scarlets don't like humidity and best results are obtained with hot and dry days and cool and cold and dry nights, if your not having ant luck with the birds in an open aviary try them in an enclosed area. Hope this helps John

hi,I am not an expert on grass parakeets, but ,fortunately i am the one who introduced them here in pakistan .I bred scarlets in the past in out door aviay. They don,t like winters, they can,t stand cold winds. They like mix seed with a bit of fish oil applied or any good breeding concentrate and apples,a bit of sprouts too.The nest box meas 6x6 x9 with a two inch entrance at top left corner.Wood shavings were used for nesting material.U can try by putting two nest boxes at different sites in the aviary.Keep a look on their behaviour,do they look at each other like lovers or tolerate each other like a husband and wife (married 10 years ago). That will give u an idea whether to persist with same pair or go for a change. They are not difficult to breed ,if this pair does not breed please go for a change, but keep scarlets in your collection .They are adorable birds .Mir
