Im thinking about starting to hand-rear and ive got my eye on a baby Kakariki. I dont want to take it out of the nest box until its altleast 3 weeks old, cos this is my first attempt. Anyways I'm just wondering how necessary it is to leg band? my little 'how to rear' book says it is and that it should be done after about 1 week. I dont really want to take the baby out the nest box then to do it, and I'm worried I'll hurt its little foot. Suggestions please

I have never done it, but from what i have read it needs to be done before 3 weeks. My ekkie is not banded and she was handraised by the breeder..........he obviously doesn't band them. Rani is banded and she too was handraised by the breeder until 6 weeks then I finished her the last 4 weeks. Personally I like them banded as it has their identification or at least the breeders info anyway and then hopefully can be bought back to me. I am actually considering micro chipping mine..............just got to look into it more, and find someone who knows how to do it. Others do not believe in banding as it is a risk of getting caught in something.........but in all honesty I have had quite a few birds (cockatiels) banded and they never had them caught in anything.........but I know it can happen, just like me getting my rings caught on things and almost ripping the fingers off but I still wear the rings. ;D

I band my birds but use split rings and don't put them on until at least three weeks mainly because I'm not game enough to try closed bands. It is important to get the correct size rings so they don't fall off. As far as the ring getting caught in something that does happen but very rarely.

I personally don't like putting rings on pet birds. I only band my Alexandrines now because I have them DNA sexed. I have stopped putting rings on my baby cockatiels that I handrear for pets. I have seen a lot of pets get their rings caught of toys and branches in their cages. A friend I mine only last week took her pet cockatiel to the vet with a swollen foot, caused by a seed getting in under the ring and causing a large sore which had to be cut out. The vet was very mad and said he hated seeing pet birds with rings on. I have had a couple of birds in my aviary get their rings caught, I have been lucky enough to find them before they did any damage to their legs.

Thanx guys! but what exactly are split rings? If they are what they sound like, then I think I might use them Is there somewhere that has a chart or something for Ring sizes? or should the manufacturer know? My Quaker is closed rung, and so far he has had no problems, but I'll keep an eye out now

My Quaker is closed rung, and so far he has had no problems, but I'll keep an eye out now Split rings are exactly that, split, and you open them up place them on the bird and squeeze them closed. The guy that sells the rings should know what size you want I get my rings form a guy here in Sydney that manufactures them and they cost me about 25c each, he will stamp them with whatever i want and give me any colour i want too. I band most of mine mainly for identification purposes, but always have trouble getting the birds to keep the closed rings on, so mainly use split rings. John I'd be interested to know where you get your rings from. I only have bought mine from the one birdshop, but sometimes he is hard for me to get to. Thanks.

Kakarikis take a size 9 the same as cockatiels. I found that size to be far too big for their thin legs, so I now use size 8 which I find a lot better.

I get my rings form Pet Care Direct at Mortdale Laraine, he is the main manufacturer of leg rings in the place. He will make them to order what ever colour you want and what ever identification info you like I order them 100 at a time, he has a factory where he makes all his equipment such as bird feeders and the like and i find it best to ring him at there on 95333785 his name is Bruce I order them and then pick them up from Pet Care Direct during the week, usually about three days later. Or you can give me all the information on them and Ill order them and pick them up for you. John
