Hi, I would just like to get a few opinions on wether to let my scarlet hen go down on eggs again. She has just fledged her first 4 chicks and has been spending time back in the box. I think its geting too hot now in Brisbane, but I'm also worried if she is ready to lay again and I take the box away do I risk her getting egg bound? if there's an egg but no where to lay it? sounds silly but I don't want to hurt her. Thanks.

I don't think she would go egg bound because of not having a box. My galah layed a few eggs and there was never a box or log or anything like that with her. But I don't know what it would be like for an actual breeder bird. My Bo never had a mate or babies. My main concern would be the heat.....................but I am not a breeder either. Hopefully someone who has more experience with breeding can help you. I just wanted to let you know that Bo layed a few eggs with no problems.

Thanks, I suppose she'll just lay on the floor, she is still in the box today, no eggs.

Sounds like she is going to lay again, I wouldn't worry about it and let her go. If you take the box out she will only lay on the floor and in my opinion she is better off laying in a box than on the floor.

I checked again this morning, still no eggs but she's determined to stay in there. Thanks for your advice!

I would definitely let her go to raise a second clutch for the season, only suggestion would be to make sure your hen bird gets plenty of Calcium either via cuttle bone or calcium additive in drinking water. Neophemas often have 2-3 clutches per breeding season...

Thanks, they certainly love their cuttle bone. The aviary she's in gets shade by 1pm so hopefully she won't get too hot. Both parents have done a great job on the first four so I'm happy to let them try again now.
