yeah you can cut off a hollow log, but make sure there are aboslutely no signs that it is being used by another species. You can normally get big nesting boxes for birds like taht, or you can get a steel garbage bin and line it with wood.

I will make sure another species isnt using the log if i get one, i think i have one at the beach house in an unused avairy anyway and if i dont use that i will probably be able to find one in the reserve on the ground. I have looked for big nest boxes but havent found any around so mabye the log is a better option, Well see!!
Thanks guys

welcome back alemap glad to see you back. Slack is not my bird but he is a corella (cockatoo). Thanks for the info on the nest boxes too. Hubby is putting the wire on my aviary now (knowing him it will take a long time to finish this though) and I thought I should start thinking about nest boxes for the birds.

Bit "slack" with a return..lol.. but Eclectus and Alex's prefer nest box's 60-100 cm tall With Eclectus diameter 30-40cm while the Alex is 20-30cm,but as they say ...the bigger the better I have a Cockatiel pair currently nesting in a Superb Parrot box l made 80x25x25cm's

do you have any pics Greg?? Does the nest need to be L shaped (I read somewhere some nest boxes are L shaped). I also noticed (I think in one of your pics Greg) wire on the inside so the parents could climb out??? I might call in and see Skye and Shrekie's breeder again soon and he can show me what he uses. The more ideas the better hey ;D

Put a wire ladder from nest hole to the bottom so birds can climb slowly down to the eggs, eckies are notorious for eating there eggs if this happens try removing the cock as soon as the hen starts sitting.

Nestbox's in "my opinion" don't need to be L Shaped I was led to believe, once they should thou with my travels and seeing breeder's around l have noticed they all have just long nestbox's and successfully breed well I presonnally think the L shaped box is a "MYTH" for what ever reasons??? This is only my opininon and currently have all my boxes long and any L shaped have been converted to long boxes again(sometimes we hear to much and get lost in what is going one..lol..birds breeding don't select L or Long shaped boxes??at the end of the day..he.. all they want to do is breed and if they step on eggs(as the myth says why we should have L shaped boxs..well they could do that also in Long shaped.. Birds in my opinion don't get clumsy and step on eggs.. because of a shape of there home This is only my opinion Wire on the other hand is great.. Provided you file the joins so there are no sharp bits on the ends... it not only is easy to install but creates a easy step out for the birds leaving home for there first time Here is a pic of one of my nest's inside with wire I find still adding the main perch for entry and exit helpful when l see my birds venture in and out

Tables and Cupboards people don't want, but yes most is Chipboard Oh! if you didn't know the green colour in the chipboard is not aresnic like l thought when l collected this timber.Made some call's to find out and it's a water adhesive to protect the board

can't this poison the birds if they injest it??? I know I sound sus of everything........but alex's are terrible for chewing. Maybe not so much the ekkies as Skye doesn't chew like Shrekie and Takoda.

I have personnally use nothing but recycled material when l can..he..not sure if it can poison the birds, but l have yet to have a bird die from this material Saying that l know what l am looking for also, so if in dought don't grab old material more than 15 years for the water proving has only been around 10 or so..you have to look at the material to be sure...for l know very old material had dangerous glues...""" if in dought as they say throw it out ,then be sure""" Best buy new material and make sure it's not treated with a stamp also(it means its fumagated)it has a tree type of stamp.... il
