Hi Frank, hopefully I have posted this in the right section. The female tiel in question use to eat nothing but sunflower seeds & use to pull them out of her chest. As she doen't get them as a hard seed, she doen't do it anymore. The reason I was asking if it changes when sprouted is because she & mate have 4 new babies & I was hoping it would be allright to give it to her. Thank you for your advise. Much appreciated. Cheers Anna

Anna you can give it to her without a worry but stick to the ratios we mentioned 50% Wheat 20% Grey Sunflower 15% Triticarle 15% Mung Bean if you don't use Triticarle then add extra wheat ;)cheers Frank

Hey Frank, just wanted to say thanks for the info on the sprouts. Even Zack is getting stuck into them now. Mind you it did take me sitting with her "pretending" i was eating them too, until she would actually eat them instead of just throw them around the cage!! ;D
Now they have two little bundles to feed they are both ploughing through the sprouts.
Thanks, Karen

Regarding Sprouts Karen a little tip, when a large clutch of 4 or more chicks are in the nest i like to sprinkle using a salt shaker a product called Soluvet ,it is a Multi-Vitamin additive and sprinkled on the sprouts is very beneficial to the younger chicks that might not get all the goodness from mum and dad but carefull not too much just a light sprikle it's available at most pet stores cheers Frank

thanks for the tip Frank. I'll try to track it down. Do you think it would also be a good thing to add a smidge to handrearing formulas? If it gives them a boost it might help any smaller babies or ones having trouble?? Thanks Karen

Thanks Frank and Anna, I've never had problems with handrearing my tiels. They have always been good sized. But it is good to know incase needed. All is going well with my babies though. Just doing a bit of research.
Thanks Karen

I sometimes add a couple of mls of liquid calcium to the container of sprouts for the young H/R birds and for those starting to lay their clutch of eggs but not to much and I also add a Vitamin suppliment powder just a light sprinkle. Cheers Darren

Hi Emz, I put a handfull in a dish everyday for my birds and to be honest with you it never lasts long eneough to go off ;D. I do remove any that is left over, scraps and spent seed, at the end of every day however the birds are hanging off the wire the next morning waiting for the next lot ;D ;D.
Don't forget to sprinkle them with a small amount of vitamins, it's a good way to get that extra boost for the birds.
John
