Thank you for posting this link Robert I have not, will not, and absolutely condemn the use of pellets as a food for pet birds.

I have not read the link (slack I know) but I will not use them either. It is not a natural diet for them. If birds are fed the correct food in the first place with plenty of fresh fruit and veges and I mean plenty not just the odd bit of apple or grape or whatever.......plenty of dark leafy things like silverbeat (which my birds love), carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, apples, mangoes (when in season) etc etc oh rockmelon and the seeds (they love them) pumpkin and the seeds (also relish them) then there should not be too much problem. I know with ekkies that the pellets with their fortified vitamins and minerals and artificial colourings and additives can be a big problem and can be a cause for some toe tapping and feather plucking. Skye has had toe tap now a few times...........with her it is not pellets as she never gets them, but it seems to be a lack of calcium because when she eats chicken bones (cooked well of couse) and cuttlefish bones and boiled eggs with the shells, she seems to be better withing a few hours. I believe that pellets were invented for many reasons, but one (in my humble opinion for all it is worth anyway) of the reasons is that many people only give their birds seed, nothing else, just seed and birds were getting very sick. So someone decided to try to make something with "everything" in it for the birds, so basically for the lazy, pellets are an easy option, but they are still not a natural diet for the birds.............just like Mcdonalds is not a natural diet for us and look at all the problems happening in the world today and diseases from humans eating "the wrong diet". I am not meaning to rubbish anyone who uses pellets, but I don't use them and believe that our birds are much better off on a natural diet.........or as natural as we can make it in todays world of "artificial" just about everything and additives in just about everything. I will step off my soap box now

Thanks Jules and Amanda.........but I will correct myself on something I said.
I should have said "for the uneducated" instead of "for the lazy". I have to admit that many years ago I did not realise they needed to have lots of fresh fruit and veges and it really is since the "internet" and researching about ekkies and other birds, that I realised the error of my ways too. But my birds did get some fruit and veges just probably not enough........not like the birds I have now.
