I've always been lead to believe that apple seeds are bad for your fids but I've been doing some research on the red capped parrot as I'm handrearing a baby and it seems one of the ways they get food is that they chew holes in the apples to get to the seeds. I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on the apple seed thing as if they're part of the natural diet should I be feeding the seeds as well as the flesh.

I was under the impression that the apple seeds had asenic in them.........just like apricots and plums and peaches etc...........I never used to worry about it in the past and my birds survived, but now don't give them any. Birds in the wild eat them............

Apple belongs to the Malus species. Apple SEEDS contain cyanogenic glycosides which release cyanide when ingested. It is not necessary to core apples before giving them to your birds. The small amount of cyanide that would be released from ingesting a few seeds is very unlikely to cause cyanide toxicity in birds. If they were to ingest a large number, cyanide poisoning could occur.

No Tracey it is Cyanide, just as deadly Personally I don't give my birds any thing like that, I believe in being cautious on things like that and I am just not prepared to take the chance.

Since they are a part of the natural diet of red caps I will give him a few but not go overboard.

Why don't just give them an apple core to chew on,l that shouldn't hurt them, just as a side issue I love Red Caps I had a pair at on stage but had to get rid of them as they fought with my ring necks that I had at the time.

This little one I've got is adorable and is, as I type, sitting on my shoulder playing with my hair and occasionally climbing down to have a play with the keyboard. ;D
