was just wandering what sex would be better i heard that females lay eggs even tho they don't have a male and can get egg bound. I don't want that to happen do they only lay eggs if there provided with a nest box or would they still lay eggs even tho they have no nest box. I'm asking this cause i'm not sure on what sex i want and i'm also going to get another bird after the sun conure. I'm going to get an indian ringneck and was wondering if the same sexed bird like male sun male ringneck would get along or would they fight. Any info on the suns and ringnecks would be great. I want to make sure i do this good. I have a long time to research on them to make sure i get everything right. When i do evently get them they will be out of there cages all day unless i'm going out or going to bed. They will have there own play gym just in chase they want there own time to themselfs. I will be giving them one on one affection which comes to another question should i always handle the sun conure first since he/she will be my first bird so he/she doesn't get jealous. I know julie at the pet shop owns a sun conure and cockatiels she handles the cockatiels first since they were the first birds brought into there house and then she handles her sun conure lollie. Every time i go into the pet shop there sun conure lollie calls me so i go over and and she steps up on my finger. She can be loud at times and sometimes she nibbles on my fingers all i say is no in a polite voice and she stops doing it. I was told when i do get another bird to introduce them slowy and bring them out and if any fighting occurs to spilt them up and say no thats enough. Is this alright to do i've seen julie put a little albino budgie in with her cockatiels and sun conure one of her cockatiels was trying to fight with her. Julie said no stop that and now they get along well with each other. So if anyone can tell me anything about sun conures and indian ringnecks i would be very greatfull. Thanks in advance bye

Looks like you have already done a lot of reserch already...You have a lot of great infor in what you have posted here...About sex...well not all female pets will lay eggs....But yes dont have a nest box...You would be safer to get males....and I find the female ring necks can get a bit nippy...and jealous..The sun conures do like to sleep in a box at night...But there is another thing that you can get..It is a birdie bed...Polly has or had one for her suns...I dont think she still has got that photo with her name know...Your pet shop mite already have these..They are a perch with a tent type thing over it..no bottom so that there is no where for an egg to be layed...Here is a site.... www.chopperstoys.com/CatalogSleepers.htmlNatale

thanks for the link natalie i will be looking at bird cages in march next year i have a price on a big cage for $230 when i'm in the pet shop next i will have a look at there toys and see about the birdy bed. I want my little boy to be happy before he comes home. before i bring him home i will be getting julie to show me how to clip his wings. Another question do hand reared birds stay still for wing clipping or do you have to cover there head with a towel. Is hand reared the same as hand raised like pulled from the nest at a young age and hand fed.
I'm asking this cause i did own a cockatiel he wasn't very friendly i tryed to hand tame him i moved very slowy and tryed couching him with food but he wouldn't come to me i tryed this for year to no success no progress what so ever. Makes me think the pet shop i got him from which is now closed lied to me he said he was hand raised. I gave him a week to settle in but he wouldn't step up on my finger. Every time i went to his cage he would go up the side of the cage and went to the farest away from me sorry about the spelling. Makes me think he was an aviary bird and he just said they were hand raised i handled him he flow down on the ground which seemed werid to me cause julies birds never want to hop off when i pick them up. I gave him to a friend which she has tryed to hand tame him too he was a bad bird used to always bite when you put your hands in the cage. She is thinking of giving him to her friend which has an aviary and wants him as a breeding bird shes thinking of doing this and getting a nice hand reared one. Could i have done the wrong thing with trying to hand tame him or was he a bird that doesn't like to be touched. he is now 3 years old.

You have done the right thing for the cockateil now the only thing is that he would have been put through a lot of stress...handraised and hand fed is the same..What happens some times.Tame birds are taken to the pet shops, not played with whiles there...So they can loose touch with us...But I would say that yours was not tame from the start...I do heaps of teils and others...But some times it doesnt matter what you do,there is always that one that doesnt want to be tame...They wean and thats it..
wing clipping: Not they dont stay still...You are best to ask your friend to help you with this...So the next time I would take him back there...There are things to look out for before you to trim a wing...Blood feathers...which you should ask your freind to show you what they look like...

Hillcrest Tiels i haven't heard of that place we only have a pet shop here that deals with bird cages. MotherHen thanks for all the information it has helped me heaps i have now decided what sex i'm going for i'm going to get a male sun conure and a male blue indian ringneck. I will be getting the sun conure first since i've alsways wanted one of them. Is there anything else i need to know hmmm we can't can't bird pellets here but we can get high quality bird seed. I was thinking of giving them bird seed, fresh fruit and vegies like apples, oranges, peaches, necterines, bannanas, grapes, carrots, brocclli, califlower, beens, peas, corn, does this sound alright. I was thinking of mixing it up like say monday he will get orange, bannana, carrots, and brocclli, and then tuesday peaches, apples, califlower, and peas so they don't get bored with there food does this sound like a good idea. I know fresh fruit spoils in a couple of hours so i will remove what has not been eatten and replace with fresh fruit. I will also be putting cuttlebone in there cages and will also have some cuttlebone on there play gyms, there also will be seed and fruit, vegies and water on there play gym to so it saves them from going into there cages to eat and drink. Should i teach them to step up on my finger cause julies birds you don't need to tell them all you have to do is put your finger below the feet and they step up. Also would sun conures and indian ringnecks allow strangers to pick them up. Cause my sisters friend has always got a habbit of picking up my animals without asking i tell her not to but she doesn't listen. She also allows her children to play with my animals and there rough so if they were to get a hold of my birds and were rough with them will they not want to be handled by me anymore. If it comes to it i will lock my door and if she finds out i do have birds i will just have to say that her sons are not to touch them cause there companion birds. My dad used to have a very friendly cockatiel until a child handled him and swang his hands around after that my dad couldn't handle him again. I do not want that to happen to my birds.

Hi sun.. You have done it again...I think you have answered your self...sounds like you are on the right track there About step up..if they have been rasied well they should have already been tort this...All my handrasied birds do this...When buying a bird...if they dont do it for you then and there, well to me that person did not care to much...only in it for the money...When buying a bird..and you get one from there home...look around to see how clean they are... is there any bird medication around...You can learn a lot just by having a look... julie at the pet shop has offered to pick up my bird when i'm ready to get one since i have no means of transport she knows what to look for in heath wize i still have to read up on the heath and dieases birds can catch. She might ask me to come along with her so i can talk to the breeder face to face. Julie said the breeder will give me all these interactions (spelling) of what not to do and what to do and what not to feed and what is alright to feed. All i have to do now is keep my mind from going crazy with the waiting i have to do. in march i will be laybying his cage, toys, play gym and all that then i will save up to get him.The breeder said he should have some eggs incubating around june so i might have to wait around 2 months depends when there ready i will have to give him his last hand feeding which is once a day does anyone know what age this happens.I do not know if i have to do this with the indian ringneck. Julie didn't mention what breeder breeds them. well thats all my questions for now. well thanks again natalie for the information.

Birds are all different....Some are early weaners....That depends on the bird...I had a late weaner once...It only took her to wean in 6 months that was a teil....There are other birds that dont wean till 12 months old...but your little guy could be 6,8,10 weeks old before on one feed a day...it is all up to the bird...

well i guess its the waiting game now.I just have to keep my self from going crazy. Like i was told don't rush into things to soon, good things come to those who wait. The more infromation i get the better i will understand my bird. i went into the pet shop today lollie there sun conure looked very tired i asked george whats wrong he said children were in there all day holding her and she wore out, poor girl. Every time that child put her down another one would come and pick her up george said it went like that all day so i wouldn't blame the poor girl for being tired i hope they put her to bed early tonight she needs it.
