Okay, I admit I am a complete ignoramous when it comes to avian genetics - I thought a pied was what you called a bird when it wasn't anything else. Is our new bird a pied? Okay, what am I doing wrong with these photos. I hit the browse button, choose my photo, hit host it, copy the thumbnail for forums code and paste it into my text box. But I only get a link and not a photo. What am I doing wrong? And more importantly, what type of tiel do I have? Thanks all.

the only thing I can think of is your not copying the complete link in the box or the wrong link is being used. Try copying the whole thing in the box and make sure it's the forum one (it says it at the RH side of the boxes) BTW He looks like a cheeky little character, with the head cocked to the side. Such a cutie

I am guess he is about 12 weeks old. We have had him two weeks now and when I asked at the pet shop they told me he was probably 8 weeks, then said they had had him for nearly 4 weeks. I am assuming he must have been about 8 weeks when the Pet Shop got him but I could be wrong. He does look like he has a lot of character but unfortunately he still hates me because I clipped his wing. You know, I have heaps of books and I read it all and I should have known not to clip myself but there you go. Not game enough to clip the other now I am also assuming it is a he. He was the loudest in the shop when we got him but he hasn't made much noise since we brought him home which is heart breaking. If I don't make much progress in the next six weeks, I'll just have to buy an aviary and a mate for him and a h/r for us inside. lol ;D

Thanks Bill for fixing the photo. I am choosing the thumbnail for forums 1 and 2 but neither codes show a photo in the previews just the link. It is probably something really obvious .......

Hi Kath, from your pic your tiel is a normal grey but he/she is also split for pied. The yellow feathers on the front of its face indicate that. If it is a male he could also carry other genes like split for pearl, but you will not really know till you breed him. If you wanted to get pied babies you would need to have another that is visual pied female but a female split for pied could also give you pied babies, but I have found with just using normal but split for pied that I do tend to get more normal babies but split for pied if that makes sense. Cheers Anna

Thanks for that info Ollie - Waterford WA, Vic or Qld? Frank informed me there is a local one (for me) on May 15th 11:00 am so that must make 46 sleeps for me. Anna - thanks for that info. I'm hoping the more I'm exposed to this genetic/mutation language, the more it might make sense. At the moment, learning Russian is beginning to look easier. ;D The pennies are beginning to drop though, can't believe that I thought pied was just a cockatiel name for a bitzer. Still have to name this liitle bloke. We have trialled Ollie, cause his front is quite olive looking, Bart cause his crest is constantly standing, and now Bibby cause he has a sort of bib on his chest which doesn't really show in the photo. None seem right for him. He is certainly a determined little character and if I can win him over, he'll be adorable. I try to sit by his cage for at least 10 minutes every hour or so and talk quietly to him. He will eat sunflowers out of my hand at the moment so that is some sort of progress I guess.

he sure is gorgeous!!! whatever type he is and whatever the sex lol it took me a week to name Monty....it takes a bit for their character to show through...i had several names and they jus didn't fit...i was asking another forum and they came up with 100's of names and non seemed to fit..then monty came and it's stuck....6 mths later we are now sure He is a SHE....so monty is not really fitting anymre but i can't get used to calling him a her and i won't change his name.. he mostly gets called Monts anyway lol goodluck in getting him used to you...i had one like that and my hand was like a pin cushion.it took me 2 weeks to get him tamed..monts is a handreared one though he is amazingly tame and so gentle and sooooo devoted to me..he's my bestest friend

Hey Kath I'd like to explain to you that in Cockatiels a Pied is a bird that carries a specific gene and in Tiels you need both parents to carry this gene to produce young that are Pied. To expain pied sometimes can be complex but in simple terms a tiel that carries a Lot of yellow(apart from Lutinos) or a Lot of white(apart from Albino)is most likely a Pied in your case a grey bird to be pied would have some yellow on its body and flights and tail feathers.Sometimes a bird can be identified by little tick masrkings on the back of the head indicating that the Tiel is carrying Pied genetics. I also would say that your bird is in the vicinity of 12 weeks of age as some of the Yellow on the face is starting to show possibly indicating you have a male? hope we have clarified it for you cheers Frank
