Hi everyone. My name is Kath and I have two kids, 8 and 10, and one fid, a cockatiel. We had the most adorable, loving, loyal, beautiful pearl named Cheeky. But I will post his story on the sadly missed board when I feel I can. We now have a young pied? maybe eight weeks old and I think he is a male because he is very loud. He hasn't been hand raised like our pearl and the taming progress seems to be very slow. He seems to despise me at the moment and I am looking for some advice or encouragement We also need a name! I will try to post a photo soon. I can get this bird to stand on a stick when I say up and he did stand on my finger once but since I had trouble catching him after letting him fly inside he seems very angry with me and has drawn blood a few times. Now I am a bit nervous to offer my finger. I trimmed one wing last night - regretfully - about six primary feathers but that has only slightly slowed his flight and made him angrier. I suppose I will have to trim a couple more. I have a lot of questions but that is all for now.

Welcome Kath! Lots of time and patience will be needed. The first step is to win confidence and I think it would have been better to get someone else to clip the wing. They take a long time to forget if ever. Act calm and don't let it think you are frightened. No jerky movements and no loud voices to start with. I have always found with tiels it is the females who are nippy. Good luck and I'm sure there's heaps of good advice coming your way.

Thank you everyone for your friendly welcomes. Very much appreciated. I did manage to tame a similiar tiel over the past six weeks and I had him at a wonderful stage where he would fly to me wherever I was in the house and could copy our whistles, etc. and then I made a dreadful mistake one day forgetting he was on my shoulder and going outside. Our Cheeky used to go everywhere with us - walks to the river, down to the school to read with the kids, help weed the garden, and I just forgot for a few seconds it wasn't Cheeks on my shoulder I still can't believe how I could have done something like that. I understand what you are saying Frank - I'm paying the price for not paying the price - should have invested more in a h/r bird. My daughter was able to coax him onto the stick last night to put him back in the cage so he obviously just has a problem with me at present. I think he is a very intelligent bright bird and if I have the patience and perseverance he will make a lovely pet. After all the encouragement above, I am off to try the toast and vegemite - and if that fails, may arrange a trip down to Tulla one day Frank? We are in Shep but often go to the airport.

I totally agree with you Ollie. Someone else clipped Cheeky's wing for me the first time. I should have asked at the pet shop. This bird was an impulse buy after a couple of days feeling so dreadfully guilty about Shadow (the previous pied). I bought him hoping that his calls might attract Shadow back - that's why I bought the noisiest one Just may have to invest in an outside avairy and learn about breeding and h/r lol Is this how it all begins? ;D
