I too am new to this website, having found it some time ago through petlink, where I regularly go 'window shopping'. I have just posted pictures of my cockatiel on the Photos forum with a couple of queries.
I live in a villa, so room is somewhat limited with close neighbours. I grew up in the country, having moved to Brisbane a couple of years ago. Having had dogs around most of my life, I really missed the company and owing to my new living conditions, I decided I would get a budgie. I initially bought a male, who was such a character, anyway through my own carelessness, he met with a fatal accident. I missed him so much that I went back and got another one, this time a female. She is not half the character, but has her own funny little ways. I then decided that I would get her a mate, but instead ended up ordering one of the baby cockatiels that the lady was hand raising at the time. I finally got to bring it home, but within a couple of weeks it became obvious that it was quite sick and not getting better, so I had to take it back. I was quite distraught, as I had already got attached to the little thing.
Anyway, the lady had one that she said that she had kept as a pet, but did not have the time to put into it as she was kept busy with all the babies that she was handraising. So, I ended up with Aussie. I have no idea how old s/he was, but was fully feathered when I got her last June. I have enjoyed her so much. I started full time work this February and so I went back and got another female budgie as a mate for my other one. But poor old Aussie is still by herself and really misses me even though I have her cage close to the budgies.
I really want to get another hand raised one, but I am hesitant, as I want the same sex, which I am presuming is female. With my lack of experience, I am not sure how compatible they are together for if they don't get on I don't have too much room for another cage as I am not into small cages. Also, no one can ever tell if their babies are male or female, and bringing the oposite sex into the house would just complicate things too much, besides I love 'sooky'.
I dream of owning some acreage some time in the future and would love to breed, having found out how much fun they are to have around. But, at this stage this is very much a dream. It is probably good that I am so limited by room and an awareness of the closeness of neighbours as I usually allow about 2 hours to go and buy their feed from the local pet shop that has a large bird section.
Oops, such a long 'me introduction'. I have been reading the postings on this website for some time and it is so informative for a newbie like me. Thanks so much for such a great forum.
