thanks again for the warm hello, i went to a bird sale on the weekend but made the mistake of bringing my husband , he has always wanted an eclectus and now has his sights set firmly on an eckie and only and eckie we saw two there a 5y male who was sold by the time we arrived and not a pet anyway and a 10month old female but the breeder told us she was a tad nasty although hand raised would come good with lots of time put into her, i was hesitant so we left , it was interesting to see the variety of birds and what was popular . All my toys i have already are suited to a smaller bird , just as well i have another cage tucked away in the garage ..

I have a female ekkie and she is the best bird I have ever owned. She is the best talker too. At the moment she is becoming a terrible teenager having turned 2 last month (no this month actually .... May) and she has bitten me a couple of times. I have contacted a lady called Carolyn Swicegood who is an ekkie breeder in the U.S and I was a member of her mailing list for over 1 year..................she told me not to take it personally and that she would pass through this stage "unscathed".............(I just hope I do too. LOL........) nah joking about the "unscathed" she is still pretty good I just have to watch her body language a lot better and do not let her on my shoulder at the moment until she passes through this stage.
Mind you all birds do go through hormonal stages and usually come through fine.

hi Tracey
yes i have heard birds go through the hormonal stage having had a female alex years ago i know how moody they can get, my husband is quite keen on a male ecky , ive also read Carol Swicegood's website, i did a lot of research a couple of years ago when we were looking into getting an ecky then but we put it off as i fell pregnant and we decided the time wouldnt be right, now our youngest is 16months old i have a lot more time on my hands plus im home all the time, i was wondering do you clip your girl or does she have free flight through the house,
cheers

I clip her...........I did give her free flight for a while and even taught to recall to me on command, but she developed attitude and I clipped her again and she went back to being her lovely self. She is not affectionate like a cockatoo though, but does have her way of showing her affection.

thanks Tracey, im wondering too we go away once a year for 5 days so im not sure what i would do then , i dont really want to let a stranger into my house would she/he be ok on there own if one left plenty of food and water or are there trust worthy bird sitters out there that mind birds in their homes, i can leave my fish tanks for 5 days just not sure about a big parrot,
cheers

I take her with me. We go away for up to 5 days at a time and have taken both birds with us. But lately we leave the teenagers at home if it is only a couple of days and they look after the birds.
We are going away for 2 weeks this school holidays and are taking all the kids and dogs and birds with us this time..............lucky it is a house we just bought and plan on living in (in about 18months to 2 years) but need to rent it out for a while until then, so we will camp in it while doing some cleaning up and getting it ready for rental.

well that looks like the only option for me too , my family and friends are all interstate so i dont have much choice but it would be a long drive 10 hours in a car, on different note i found a hand raised 6month old ecky cock we are hopefully looking at him tonight or tomorrow, fingers crossed i found him on Petlink he has been hand raised from a week old and around kids too a added bonus,
cheers Sarah

my husband is going tomorrow evening to the breeder straight from work and with 3 kids i will stay home , i just hope all goes well, im now going to go out tomorrow and find some metal food/seed containers as mine are plastic and might not be suitable for an ecky not sure if they would chew them, i dont have a proper carry cage either though i have a plastic pet carrier thats never been used the breeder reckons that will suffice for the trip home, cant wait just hope it all doesnt fall through, will definitely post pics if all goes according to plan
