Hi everyone,
I'm Sebastion and live in Sydney. After a few years out of birds I am getting back into them.I've worked in the pet industry for 20yrs in varying areas and have handraised or bred a number of different bird species over the years.I am now interested in small doves (they seem to be a bugger to find here in Sydney) and finches. I am also thinking of starting something like a domestic bird rescue so that ppl will hopefully not just let them out and ultimately let them get killed.
Any assistance with locating some more doves would be great.I have already rescued a pr of diamonds & a pr of gold finches which have settled in really well.
Look forward to getting to know the guys here and learn some stuff along the way.
Cheers Bastion ;D

Hi Bastion, welcome to AussieBirds. I hope you find plenty of doves as it will be fascinating learning about other kinds of birds. Good luck with your bird rescue idea, hope it works for you.

G'Day Bastion and welcome to our forum, a few years ago when I kept finches I bought a pair of diamond doves because I liked the look of them, they were really pretty birds, I put them in with my finches and supplied them with a nest and material to see if they would breed, sure enough they bred and bred and bred the babies were the ugliest things I had ever seen but the grew into beautiful birds.
I was lucky enough to get a nice grey male in my original pair and he transfered his colour to his off spring, I lost a couple of them from the aviary over the time i had them and they escaped into the wild but continued to return with the bigger wild doves to the aviary to eat the seed around the cages.
They are really easy to breed and are a very attractive little bird, I can understand your interest in them but as you say they are a bit hard to find in bird shops. I did see a few at a shop at Kingsgrove some time ago but I couldn't say if they are still there, I suggest you try the local pet shops they sometimes have them, good luck with your search.

Also keep an eye out for bird sales and auctions as they have much more variety than you would find in a pet shop.

Thanks for the welcome.I must admit I've always liked doves...but mostly been owned by h/r Rainbow Lorikeet, and plenty of budgies over the years lol.this time round though I wanted something reasonably quiet but that was also appealing.Even managed to add a few black masked doves since my last post LOL.I must be serious this time round though as I am planning a trip to Tas to buy and transport more doves....
I am still fine tuning the rescue plan...but got that one in my head after doing some dog rescue work AND realising there really isn't much around for one of the easiest pets around (your little or HUGE feathered friend).
Cheers Sebastion

I'd love to hear how rescue works in the U.S. My ideas are working on the rescue of domestic and licence approved species...though I have completed the WIRES native bird rescue course.I will also take in poultry (please see later note),though ALL types of poultry are welcome. I hope that ALL rescues that come my way will be rehomed suitably within the aged/special needs/community and corporate facilities that have aviaries OR the voluntary assistance to aid those who "own" the bird to provide a sincere and secure home for the birds life. As per poultry..many a pet shop sells chickens yet 90% of chickens sold through these outlets turn out to be roosters and therefore discarded without ceremony once they are crowing.
Dogs, cats, horses and other animals, pets have rescue or a "safe haven" when they are no longer wanted, needed or able to be appropriately cared for.
Wrong forum room for this possily but feel free to move it to an area more suitable area for major exposure to ALL aviculturlists AS WE ALL CARE!!
