Hi im a newbie and i have just brought my first baby bird, a princess parrot called Forrest. I used to have 2 Avery PParrots a few years ago but they escaped and when i decided to get a pet bird i decided to get a pp because i think they are gorgeous and still small enough for my daughter to handle. I would love any advice on hand taming him I saw him at a pet shop and feel in love with him straight away and picked him up the same afternoon. They said he was 6 wks old and had been cracking seed for a week. I know he is still young but im guessing he is a male because he has a purple patch on his back and the top of his head is turning pinky/purple. He has learnt to step up but has started biting realllly hard, should i put him back into his cage when he does this? Anyway thanks and i am off to read more on all your birds

welcome. How long have you had the bird for..........he might need a couple of days to settle in ......... but just keep perverveing. I have never owned one, but have heard they make delightful pets, lovely quiet natured and can learn to talk too.
I will add that a lot of baby birds go through a stage of biting too. they like to experiement and see how far they can push us. Yes putting him back into his cage is a good idea........with a firm NO when he does bite or wobble your arm/hand so he is unsettled and tell him NO when he bites.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I haven't any princesses YET but will one day. Does he have a fave food you could use to gain his trust? If he does try holding the food with your hand inside his cage, eventually he will come to investigate and will soon realize that he can trust you. You could also use food as a reward when teaching him new things.

Hey thanks guys, it good to finally find a friendly forum I have had Forrest for a week and a half and have found he really likes celery leaves, and grasses, He also loved capsicum the first time i gave it to him. I think sometimes he is trying to get food out of my fingers? maybe like his mother did? Anyway i have realised that when he bits its because he is hungry or tired. Thats all he does after 10 mins of being out hes starving. He takes after me in that ;D
