Has anyone any experience with hand raising these. I have been told they are not too friendly.

Well they are eating now but still pretty feisty, don't think they will be suitable as hand raised pets just aviary birds.

A lot of rosella's go back to the wild state...Specialy the pale heads....it is hard to get one that will stay tame...the best ones are the crisson rosella's..they can make great pets..

hi there i have handreared quite a few rosella from different ages as i got alot of orphans when i was doing wild life care i was concerned at first about release time as most handreared parrots will bond to you to some degree but these buggers i had no trouble releasing them because as soon as they could fly a bit they were back to being flighty wild acting birds i have not heard of anyone keeping them tame as pets so an avairy will be best , thats just my experience

Many years ago we hand reared a crimson rosella. He was friednly for a while, and then got nippy. We had him in a cage out back, and he was much happier. He would come and chat to you and eat from your hand, but he would still give your finger a good go if given the chance.

Just to let you all know the rosella are at present flying around my chicken pen and although they will let us pat them and they fly to our hand, they have gone quite wild and not suitable for pets.

the trick is to keep them separate and spend A LOT of time with them. Dougal does get defensive when it comes to me being in his cage but he is a perfect bird now. On the other hand King parrots are said to be perfect hand raised pets and I beg to differ......

Hi Amanda
I'm curious, what type of bird is Dougal? From my experience with Rosellas, my Crimson is really tame compared with my Easterns.

Dougal (the bird in my avatar) Is a northern rosella. He is about 8 months old. He doesn't like to be touched and is sometimes scared of the hand. He is really defensive of his cage now and will attack your hand too which makes it difficult to difficult to feed him sometimes. I just chase him off with the bird net! He gets the message now and hops away.

I love his colours. Do they do well in Sydney or is it too cold for them? With the name Northern, they might like the tropics.
