Budgies will feed other babies Natalie I do it all the time with my birds. I once had a two hens lay in the same box and they hatched 12 babies between the two of them and they would feed all the babies and they raised all 12

I have a different problem at the moment Natalie, I have a pied hen that won't incubate her eggs, she lays them and then just leaves them to come out and sit with the boyfriend. So I am at present fostering her eggs out to another hen that is sitting on eggs and laid around the same time.

The eggs I fostered out are bieng incubated by the other hen she has accepted them with no problem. I have a hen in the next box and she has already hatched some babies one of which is a Lutino ;D It was the last one hatched and is as yellow as can be with bright red eyes, mum is just a plain old green and dad isnt much different so someone is carrying the Ino gene.

Personally I wouldn't trust her Natalie she sounds like a bad mother to me and to be honest you could wake up to the "Texas Chainsaw Masacre" in the morning finding all babies dead if you cant foster them then I would pull them. At least budgies are not hard to hand raise and take food reasonably easy, of course that all depends on whether you have the time to hand raise them or not.

i am breeding budgies at the moment and handrearing some as well, but that's by choice anyway i was checking some eggs the other day and as i had the door up.... uh oh... yep she flew right out under my arm. i was debating on what i should do with the babies, she had 2 newly hatched and 3 that were about 5 days old. after she flew he went straight back in the box. i had another pair that only hatched out 3 of her 5 eggs so i put the 2 newly hatched in with her and she fed them straight away ;D i thought i would leave the other 3 older chicks with dad and keep an eye on them during the day to see if he feeds them. guess what it has been 3 days and dad is doing a wonderful job of feeding his babies. what a little champion single dad he is. ;D. i think he is still missing his wife though

Yep Dad will take over if Mum goes missing or dies but if she is still around then he will leave her to it most of the time. I'm glad you pulled them Natalie as I still dont trust her. Dont worry about Dad missing his wife he will soon find another one, Bidgies are a not the most faithfull bird in the flock. John

He wont Incubate them if she is still around Natalie, she will chase him out of the nest box I would put them up with the Tiels.

Im now hand reareing three budgies the mother was attacked and killed by another hen who wanted her nesting box the hen then decided she would attack the babies just to be nasty, they can be so viscious at times . I think I am going to lose the lutino it has been attacked. p.s. the reason I pulled them was because this other hen wouldn't let dad in the nest John

They are doing well at the moment, filling their crop every feed. The two oldest ones are fully feathered and quite robust birds I have them on three feeds a day at the moment and they are doing well, adding a bit of baby apple food to the mix along with a small amount of Soluvet.

The three i was handraising only two survived, I lost the little Lutino but the other two are doing well. They are just common old normal green budgies but they look great and are eating the house down. Both birds are at the " Look I can Fly" stage now and are about ready to back in the aviary.
