Yes Amanda I would have to agree, in some if the commercialy available wormers, there is very little or no instructions given. And some, In my opinion, of the wormers available in produce stores and pet shops are of little use in killing all the worms at all. If the wormer you choose to use is only half effective, or worse still, of little effect, all you are basically doing is is making the worms that did'nt die quickly, in the first couple of doses, develop an immunity to the wormer you are useing. This also applies to under-doseing, even the best of the wormers. To help everyone reading this, to understand the uses of wormers, the benefits of some of the better known or popular wormers, and also the dangers, I have included below a link to a finch breeder I know from Tasmania who is, in my opinion, quite knowledgeable on the subject. The article is about finches, so the doses will be different for larger birds of course. I draw your attention to the last two very popular wormers he mentions, I happen to agree with him, I have used both these wormers, and in my opinion you would kill more worms by pouring half a cup of tea into the water www.finchsociety.org/cfa/worms/worms.htmCheers Tony

Thanks for that link Tony. I was just interested that there has been no mention of any specific brand and was wondering if there is a rule against mentioning brand names in the forum? Guess I should keep my eye out for the fourth last mentioned stuff. Probably a very dumb question, but what is the likelihood of an inside bird getting worms? Where could he get it from?

Hi Kath ;D With a single bird kept inside it's not very likely, but if the bird is put outside for a sunning and comes into contact with wild birds, or by chance a wild bird poops in it's cage, it can be exposed this way. A new bird introduced into the household can carry these parasites and spread them as well, so it is wise to worm inside birds every 6 months. Brand names, well it's best not to mention any, who needs a possible law suit Cheers Tony

I once had 3 budgies in an inside cage long before I got in aviary birds. One of these birds contacted worms. I still to this day can't work out where she got them from. She got very thin and I spoke to the pet shop who suggested worms, after dosing she recovered really well.
