I would like to breed "Rainbow" budgies (birds with several colours on them) which I have seen recently. I have different coloured budgies but the babies are always the colours of one of the parents. Does anyone have any ideas on this subject?

Hi Laraine, to breed Rainbow budgies or ones with several colours in them it depends what the genetic mutation is called, one or both parents must be carrying the gene. I have several budgies with at least 3 different colours in them but buggered if I know what their technical term is. I just call them Pied spangles, so being pied both parents must carry the split to produce babies of this sort. Too many colour names for budgies these days, I get confused. . John might be able to help you more with this. Cheers Anna

I would imagine you are talking about pied budgies Laraine At the moment I have a pair that are producing pied babies, the male is a sea green spangle split to pied and the hen is just a normal green and yellow hen. Ordinary green and yellow birds carry all the colour genes and with out them you wont get multi coloured budgies, they might look like just plain old budgies but if you want to breed good colours you should have them in your group, they are the key to every breeders success, just don't tell anyone I told you.

Thanks for that info John, I've got 3 green and yellow babies that I was going to sell next week. I thought they were just plain old green and yellow birds as you said. I guess I'll have to have a rethink.

Hi John The mother is a nice aqua and the father is yellow with just a tinge of green. They produced 5 yellow and green babies.

I have a hen who is mainly blue, with a yellow head, and a little mauve on her head. her mate is normal blue on the body with a white head. She is sitting on six eggs at the moment.
Could someone give me an idea what colours the chicks might be please? John maybe? ;D Thankyou.

This is a close as to rainbow as I can get.Rainbow is an unofficial term for a very colorful budgie. They are better known as(clearwing opaline yellowface blues). The wing markings should be as faint as possible. Greywings, and whites (opaline yellowface blues) are mostly referred to as rainbows. Rainbows are not recognized as a specific variety for show. There is a type 11 and type 1.The type two is known as a seafoam, which is not really a true variety either. Its just a word to describe a color. These photos are of the same one That I have. Some people also perfer to them as pieds. But when showing they fall into the clear wings.I think there is a lot of debate about these guys on what they realy are.... These are what people prefer to when they ays rainbows.....They are the colouring of the ocean..Thats is the best on how to put it...

On the weekend when I was buying my usual birdseed I noticed that they had yellow-headed babies with blue bodies and wings. So of course I bought one (after deciding I wasn't going to buy any more birds for a while). I would have bought two but they were all boys. Eventually I hope to breed him to see what I get. Will post a picture when I take one.
