Hi, I have what I thought were 2 boy budgies but they are doing all the mating rituals (I think), so now I'm not sure. They are practically glued at the hip, wherever one flies the other follows immediately.
I'm fairly certain of one birds sex as his cere is a very definite blue. The other one is blue as well but not as pronouced, but I would say there is not a spot of pink or brown in either bird.
They are grooming each other, regurgitating food and rubbing their beaks along the side of the aviary (not sure if this part is part of the mating ritual).
Is it possible for 2 male birds to act this way??? I was thinking of putting a breeding box in and seeing if anything happens (the immaculate conception maybe, lol).
What I'm asking I guess is 'Is it possible for a female budgie to have a blue cere' or 'Do I have 2 boys and they are just best mates?'
Thanks for your answers, brand new to this breeding thing and it's all very exciting just waiting for the next step. Should I put my breeding boxes in now or wait for a certain time?

Hi Shelly , Yes it is possible for a hen to have a partial blue cere, however, what you are mistaking for blue on the cere may just be the discoularation of a young bird. You have said that they are feeding each other and preening it is usually for the Cock bird to feed the hen and it is also the usual thing for the hen to preen the cock so what I suggest is that you determine which bird is doing what or are they both doing it. You haven't said how old the birds are this may give us a clew as to the their behavior I would also suggest a picture of the birds if it is possible so we can asses them both.

Okay John,
I'll take a piccy tomorrow and post it on here with all the other answers. I'm fairly certain of who I think is the 'boy' and who is the 'boy/girl' but I'll put all that in the post tomorrow so if you can check back here that would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Shelly

Hi Shelly, it will be good to have some pics so that your mystery can be cleared up. Did have a bit of a chuckle though as I use to have 2 boy budgies that were a bonded together. Well more the grey budgie who I called Gay Pierre lol. He just would not bond with any female so in the end they became a pair with his parter hooking up with a female & Gay Pierre would feed her as well. It was the funniest thing to watch & yes Gay Pierre would try to mate with the other male budgie lol. I hope that you do have a female & male though & I'm sure John will be able to help you. Cheers Anna

Hi all, well finally for a picture of the birds where they weren't hiding from me, lol. The two in question are the green ones, The one on the right is about 3 years old (not less than), and the one on left is approx 15mths old. If you look, the cere is quite blue in both. With regards to the regurgitation they both do it, but more often than not (prob 90% of the time) the right one does it to the left. Am I thick or do I have 'Gay Pierre budgies' lol (I just love that description!!!!!)

Well the one on the right is an English Budgie and they are both males so it looks like you have a Gay Pierre too LOL. The bird on the right is a very nice Bird and is an English Budgie if you can get him interested in a female you will get some nice babies from him.

Scuse my ignorance but what do you mean by 'untested in a female'.
And what color do you recommend I breed him with, I have 6 females currently but the only color I don't have is a blue.

Sorry that should have read "interested in a female" the problem is with birds of this size and age is they are sometimes infertile, bigger is not always better. If they were my birds I would be trying to mate the bird on the left with one of your females ....p.erhaps a blue if you have one, you will have to isolate them or the other male will interrupt the mating process but don't worry about the big green "Pierre" he will find another friend. I don't know if your set up for selective breeding or not but in this case it would seem the way to go here, if you are try "Pierre" with a young hen and see what happens.

I'm glad you liked the description. When I come to think of it Gay Pierre was an English budgie too. He really was a beauty but he flew the coop so to speak. I hope you have better luck than me as for many years I tried to get him to bond with a female but nope, he was adamant that he wanted a boy budgie LOL. Good luck with your budgies. Cheers Anna
