I have to say Holly I have never heard of a hand raised Bourke, however there is no reason that they wouldn't make a great pet. They are a bit fragile and do tend to stress out a bit, but with some TLC these great little birds should make a great little hand raised pet. As far as feeding is concerned i would not bother with the small parrot mix my Bourke's exist quite well on a good quality budgie mix with a small amount of hulled oats and a little sunflower seed mixed in, they also get corn, endive, sprouted seed, apple and as a treat crushed up arrowroot biscuit. Good luck with you little one let us know how he gets on.

Thanks john , this explains why I could not find any info on them as tame pets lol I have only had the baby 4 hours and when I enter the room it tweets and races back and forth in front of the door and every time I open the cage door it leaps out onto my finger if it keeps this up it will be very sweet holly

Hi Holley, I have handreared some Rosa bourkes for people, They see my sons pet rosa which I handreared 6 years ago and they fall in love with them. He is a dear little thing and talks and is very tame. We have bred with him and he is a very good Dad. Rosas are easy to feed on the spoon and love attention. I feed them small parrot or cockatiel blend and pellets and frozen mixed vegetables.

I can believe everything you say regarding the personalities of Bourke's they are such a docile little bird and can be a little fragile in the breeding situation, having said that I have seen Bourke's fight with other species, mostly budgies, and can stick up for them selves.

sounds like they are great pets , lucky me ok how do you tell what sex they are ?? holly There is difficulty in sexing Rose Bourke's. There is no blue brow on the cockbird as in the normals, however the cockbird is often darker in colour on the face than the hen. They also develop grey tones on the face, head and shoulders as they get older. John

Can the ever! A few years ago we had a different pair of cockatiels and a pair of rosa bourkes in a large cage and one year they decided they wanted the cockatiels nest(lucky the chicks had come out a week earlier) and all hell broke loose and we ended up having to move the bourkes into their own separate cage!

it is nice to know they can stand up for them selves I was wondering how the bourke would go with a baby tiel as a friend at the moment it is in quarentine and not too happy as it can hear all the other birds I love the way it leaps out of the cage straight onto your finger and seems real happy to be with people holly

I would Imagine if the Bourke and the 'tiel were around the same age and raised together there wouldn't be a problem Holly, it's like most things you raise them together and they become friends.

the male tiel is still being hand fed 2 times a day, so at this stage he wont attack the baby bourke at all I might try them out side of the cage togeather and see if they like each other holly

You would have no problem with the tiel and bourke together. We raised our bourke with cockatiels and my son kept his pet tiel and pet rosa together in a cockatiel size cage and they were the best of friends. They even preened each other and the rosa would run around following the tiel.
