How long after the baby budgies come out of the nest does it take for them to be self sufficient. I have two babies and I want to give one to my sister whose budgie lost his mate. Do you think he will accept a baby, he is about 5 years old now. Also the hen has laid eggs again in the same nest should I take them out or will she be OK to breed straight away. It's years since I've had baby budgies so I've forgotten.

Usually the babies are self sufficient 2 weeks after coming out of the nest which makes them 7 weeks. I wait until they are at least 8 weeks old before I sell my baby budgies. My budgies sometimes lay more eggs as the last baby is fledging, but I don't let them have more than 2 clutches a year usually.

Thanks Laraine that works out well because they should be out while my sister is away and I'll have her bird so I can let the little one get used to him while I'm around to keep an eye on them. Bev

Another question from me. The two babies are still in the nest and the mother has 4 eggs in there as well that's she's sitting on. The babies seem OK but I was wondering if it would be better for them to take them out and feed them for a couple of weeks and let her sit peacefully on her eggs. They must be about ready to come out anyway they are about 4 weeks old and have been looking out of the box but haven't ventured out yet.

When did she lay the 4 eggs? The babies are probably keeping the eggs warm, but I would keep an eye on the Mum that she doesn't start plucking the babies to get them out early. It really is best to leave them, but if the mother or father turn on them, then yes, bring them in and keep a good eye on them to make sure they are eating enough. How old are they? At a push, they can be taken at 6 weeks, although 7 or 8 is ideal.

Thanks Lin, The 4 eggs have been laid over the last week or so and tody when I looked there is 5. I have just had a good look at the babies and the smallest one is very thin so I have taken them out, i have just fed them with a syringe and put them is a warmer. I will see how they go and hope they come good. She obviously hasn't been feeding them enough now she has the eggs.

Well, good luck with the babies. It's lucky the male didn't attck them, as they can when they want to mate again. It's best you've taken them out. Let me know how they go, won't you?

I always worry when the mother starts another clutch that she might decide the older ones are "off her hands" so to speak and not feed them. If you are into hand rearing I'd try that.
