Hi all,
My budgie that started laying eggs last week last night laid her 4th (and I hope last). I had a look at her this morning and she is covered in blood near where the egg came out. The breeding box has a large pool of blood in it too.
I know I was asking when to get them to start, but can you get them to stop, this girl is obviously not cut out for it and I don't want to harm her more than what she already is.
I don't know whether to remove the eggs, shes looking very weak and is not even going in the box now (whereas before she was in there nearly all day).
Should I remove her from the cage (but I don't want to stress her out by trying to catch her either).
Gosh, I feel like I'm slowly killing all my birds (by not actually doing anything!)

Sounds like you have a young hen that has suffered with egg bindinding or worse i would keep her in a warm place and forget about trying to breedr her! Frank

Oh I have already forgotten about breeding her, what do I do with the eggs in the box. Should I try and foster them out, should I separate this bird from her partner so that she doesn't continue laying eggs.

I hope your little hen makes it. It sounds very serious with loosing all that blood.

She needs to be seperated and placed in a warm location and given time to recover and probably never allowed to breed. If the eggs are ok then they can be fostered! Frank

Thanks for all your replies and concern.
Frank, I'll separate her first thing in the morning. She is not interested in the eggs now so I'll see if I can give them to another bird.
She's perked up a bit though, is preening herself and eating and drinking. I'm going to put some vitamins in her food rather in the hope that this gives her some energy.

Hello Shelly you were a very lucky person not to lose her It sounds very much like a case of egg binding and she was very lucky to survive. The advice Frank has given you is correct and should be followed good luck with her.
