I went to check my budgies this morning, and one was on the floor of the aviary, just laying there. I went in, and she's obviously broken her leg, right up the top, near her body. She's just laying right down on her belly. I've brought her out, and put her into a small cage with water and seed, right down the bottom, in a quiet place. I've also offered her sips of water out of a syringe. She's had a little bit. I can't take her to the vet, as I can't afford to. Does anyone have any suggestions? How can I stabilise her leg, etc?

I had a ringneck that was hit by a car and broke his hip, its hard to give good advice without seeing the bird, but with the ringneck I use that soft white tape used in hospitals I think its called micosporen or something like that I was lucky as the brake wasn't out of alignment and I just wrapped the tape around carefully so I wasn't to tight and it helped stabilize it, the birds fine now, just has a limp, if it is the leg bone itself you'd probebly need a splint made out of toothepicks or something simular, there is a vet in sydney that gives free advice over the phone or email, he has his own web site so run a google search for Dr Rob Marshall and his site is called Bird Health. His contact details will be there.

It appears to be broken or maybe dislocated right at the top, near her body, so taping it really isn't possible. she seems to be getting on ok. I still have her in a small cage, with food and water in shallow dishes on the floor. I have put a low perch in for her yesterday afternoon, as she's been trying to get up, off the floor of the cage. She's started preening herslef again too. She sits with her sore leg side up in the air, but can grasp with her beak and other foot, plus she can still fly. The bad leg is sort of tucked up, with the foot pointing backwards. So, I think after 3 weeks of TLC, she will recover fairly well. Then I'll concider whether to put her back in the aviary, or leave her in the small cage. I've heard quite a few stories of birds who have gone on to live long, halthy lives with one good leg.

they certainly can lead long happy lives, my Ziggy broke his hip nearly 2 yrs ago, and other than a limp he's no different to the other birds(except he's king in the aviary).
