I have a little hand reared, runt budgie and shes about 3 1/2 years old. For the past month she just hasn't been able to navigate around my room as well as she used to. It started off with her missing things by a few centremeters, but now she even has trouble landing on my shoulder and keeps flying into walls. Apart from that shes is her normal self and seems completly healthy. Anyone had any similar problems?? Also while on the topic of my budgie, any suggestions to stop her feeding her toys?? its not so bad now the mating season is over, but she can feed her bell excessevely. Is it bad for her health to feed her toy heaps? And heres a pic of her

Is it possible she is losing her eyesight? How do her eyes look?

Yes I was thinking the same about her eyesight. I do not think it will harm her to regurg to her "loved toys". You might have to prevent her from flying for her own safety. Maybe a vet visit to see if it is something curable.

Sounds very much like an eyesight problem guinevere, you can do a quick check your self using a torch and by shining the torch into the birds eye, you can see if there is any reaction to the light. For the birds own safety I would be clipping it's wings to prevent it from flying too far and doing some damage to it's self.

Thanx guys, it was so obvious, yet I didn't think of that. My paranoid brain was thinking tumours and all sorts. I will surely test her eyes with a torch soon. I think I'll put her wing clipping on hold for a few days as last night I did the worst thing and....stepped on her Luckily just her tail. She has been using the floor a lot more lately, cos of the bad flying. Her whole tail is gone now and I feel terrible. I must have got a bit of her wing aswell as one of her blood feathers was broken. I've been told that your suppossed to pull a blood feather out immediatly if it bleeds, but my mother-in-law reckons you dont have to as it can cause more stress (especially on a budgie). So because only a little amount of blood came out and it had stopped itself bleeding we left it. So what do you guys do if the blood feather has stopped bleeding? pull it out or leave it? Anyways my budgie is fine now and back to humping and feeding her bell. But shes had enough stress for a few days, so I'll leave the wing clipping. Thanx again guys for the respone

Don't pull blood feathers the bird can bleed to death, if you accidentally break a blood feather stop the bleeding immediately, you can use different methods, styptic pencil is always good if you don't happen to have one baking soda will do or dry soap is another method, but it is important to stop the bleeding as quickly as possible.

Yeah we have always stopped the bleeding succesfully with cornflour in the past. This one stopped bleeding by itself. From what I have read the bird wont bleed to death if you pull out the blood feather, infact the opposite. Once the feather is pulled, the follicle in the skin closes (after applying a bit of pressure) and the bleeding stops. Have I been wrongly informed??

Poor baby she is having a rough patch. One of my budgies was continually feeding its toys and I got it a mate. However, you mightn't want two. I have been told to put Betadine on any bleeding bits to stop infection. However I wouldn't until someone else approves it as well just to be on the safe side.

Tried the mate thing twice, it just didn't work. Shes actually a lot happier by herself which is good. Betadine? never heard that one before, I think I'll stick to the safe side too. Well I've been keeping a close eye on her wing and it has healed really well. And I cruelly have to admit she looks really cute with no tail
