I have had a reasonable season with budgies and had a steady flow of babies, most of them sold and gone to new owners, I still have 5 babies in the nest at the moment and for the first time in my life I have managed to breed a yellow bird, not a Lutino but a black eyed yellow. I have bred Lutino's in the past, in fact one of the other babies is exactly that a Lutino but in another box so all in all this season is going pretty well.

Baby budgies are so tiny and cute! I didn't breed any this year as I am running out of space at home since I bought too many birds. Oops. I did try last year having the budgies in with cockatiels who are breeding 2 or 3 pairs in 2m x 2m aviaries but 1 female budgie killed 4 baby tiels even though she had 6 babies of her own. So I took the budgies out and haven't tried again. I recently bought 2 baby bush/native budgies so I will set them up to breed next year.

Budgies were my first love and I think I will always have them, unfortunately you just cant mix them with other birds in a small aviary they are too possessive of their nest boxes, at one stage I had over 100 breeding pair and every colour imaginable they were truly beautiful I only have about 40 birds now but they still give me great pleasure.

They are beautiful birds, I love their songs and chirps in the yard, they always sound happy. I am quite abit obsessed with the grass parrots at the moment but won't get rid of the budgies. You must have a fantastic collection. I can't imagine where I'd fit 100 pairs, it must be a full time job to look after them all!

I have actually managed to breed a pure yellow budgie as well. The mother is a white recessive pied with a bit of blue and the father is yellow and green. They have 5 babies at present one green three blue and one yellow. I haven't looked at its eyes, will look tonight.

Take a torch with you Laraine and shine it into the eye, sometimes the eyes are that dark they don't show up red under normal light.

The five babies have all fledged and a pair of cockatiels have taken over the nest. I think its the one that wanted to share!!! LOL. The baby yellow has black eyes. What is the difference between black and pink eyes? (Apart from the colour of course).

Pink eyes are Lutino birds, black eyed are called different names from black eyed Lutino to a black eyed yellow.
The funny thing Laraine is not long after your post I also bred a black yellow budgie, first time ever for me too three in the nest one is a yellow face blue and the other is an olive.

I found this morning 3 little jellybeans, not to the same pair. She hasn't been interested in mating again, probably exhausted after beautifully raising 5 babies. LOL.

Can someone please give me some sort of information to identify what type of budgies I have? Is there are website I can go to that describes them all and what to look out for? I have 4 budgies, and for all I know, they could be rare - my guess is that they aren't!! But still curious to know as you all seem to use the proper terminology........ I say "The green budgie" and "The blue budgie" to my husband!!
