We'd given up hope of having any budgie babies but had not removed the breeding boxes because we have this one bird that lays eggs then throws them within a week (then lays more). If there is no box she just lays on the bottom of the cage so I figure it is probably not harming her to do this (just resigned myself to the fact that she was/is never going to have babies).
Anyway we go to change the seed and water today and can't find one of the birds and so we looked inside the breeding box, lifted the lid and lo and behold there's a little baby in there (mum is sitting on her as well as another 4 eggs). It's a different mum to this one that is laying the 'dud' eggs.
So I told the girls, let them be now, don't look again until I tell you it's okay to do so (thank god they're going back to school Monday).
So now what, should I give the mum some supplements???
The bird is already starting to get feathers (the very first sign of them, like pins sticking out of it's body) so I'm guessing it might be 4-5 days old (would that be right).
Anything else I should know, I'd like to do this right.

from what you have described about the pin feathers I would say the baby is a little older than 4 or 5 days and I would not hold out any hope for the remaining eggs as budgies hatch eggs every second day, depending on when they were laid of course, but thats not a problem just leave the eggs where they are they will give mum some support and stop her from sitting down hard on the baby and causing splayed legs.
Just make sure there is plenty of water and seed in the cage for her along with some vegetables such as corn, endive and perhaps a bit of apple, she wont mind you checking on the baby as budgies are very easy going in that department and indeed it might pay you just to check the baby every couple of days.

Okay, here's a piccy (posted in photos as well) Somebody suggested to me to get some saw dust for the box, would you recommend that (for some reason I though that was only a cockatiel thing, but what would I know!!)

Budgies don't require any nesting material and will survive quite well without it.
