hi there, my name is pamela and im new to your forums i was hoping someone here could offer some advice on hand raising a baby budgie please?? my cockatiel died a few weeks ago and my mums neighbour gave me a baby budgie to cheer me up.. it was about 4 weeks old and was still in the nesting box (2 siblings had come out the day before she gave me my little one - i named him fru - and there was another 1 till in the nest as well ) anyway i am handfeeding him kaytee handraising mixture 3 times a day and i have some egg and bisciut mixture in the seed tray all the time.... he seems to be really happy and friendly ( he does the funniest tricks.. twirls upside down and spins around on his rope perch ) but he has a terrible amount of poo on his feathers all the time.... i keep bathing him everyday but it just happens again all day.. is this because of the food? ?? should i be feeding him something else? i have had him for 1 week now.... how long would you feed him the kaytee's for? and when should i put some seed in??? thanks heaps for any help...... i have never hand raised a bird before.. pamela

So the bird is now 6 week's old? If so he should be on I think about 2 feed's a day... You will have to start weaning him off the formula soon.. Give him some soaked seed and try to encourage him to eat it. I'm also new to hand raising so I can't give you the best advice. I'm sure someone else will come on soon and explain it to you in more detail.

thanks heaps for your advice phill.... i bought some seed today so i will soak it overnight.. do you think the kaytee is responsible for the runny poo on his feathers??? sometimes its dark green other times it looks like the food... weird...

How runny or how thick are you making the formula? It should fall off a spoon easy but not look like water.. Some should stick to the spoon but the majority fall off.. I use vetafarm formula, hell of alot cheaper, Australian made, and so far has been great. What state do you live in?

Oh no , that's horrible. Maybe should you just buy a baby already hand reared next time until you get a bit more experience?

Yep. Quaker's make great pet's, although they are noisy, and can have quite a few behavioural problem's when not paid enough attention too, and not enough toy's. Other than that, they make great pet's.

Hi Pamela, I just answered your last question in the ringneck section. It sounds like the budgie baby may have had a bacterial infection, possible megabacteria as you mentioned green poo. Birds are notorious for not letting us know they are sick til its too late. It may have already had it before you got it. Don't feel too bad, most of us never know what causes our fids to die.

Oh gee this is very sad. I was very sad to read your baby had died. I also wondered if it was sick as it is not normal for them to have poo all over them. I used Rowdy bush on my tiels but couldn't find it for my alex's so I used Kaytee and had no problems with it. I don't like avian science though.......it made Rani's poo green and soft and she didn't gain weight, so I put her on kaytee
I also answered you in your other post/thread about which bird. If the ringnecks your friend has are nice birds then maybe getting one from that breeder might be ok as it sounds like maybe they are being handled well while being handraised as well as your friend obviously handles them too.
