Well i established what is a 'poopy spot' for him.. which is the desk in front of my keyboard (he often is on me when im at the computer, like right now!) and its easy to clean up there. As you would know lorikeets usually indicate when they're going to go cos they back up. So every time he did that i'd hold him over his spot and say POOP! and when he did it i praised him a lot. If he ever pooped on me or in another spot i'd tell him off and take him back to the poopy spot and put him there. he quickly learnt where he was supposed to go, and after a while of doing that he just learnt to go every time i say 'poop'. the only thing thats sometimes hard is stopping him going if we're not in the right place. i usually yell NO! and grab him and run him so he's over a bim or something but sometimes he doesnt hold on haha. i only tell him NO and dont scold him much though cos he cant help it im sure you could do this with any bird too, not just lories, and it shouldnt take more than a few days to get them to learn cos theyre so smart

Sounds like you have a very well house trained bird there, I am interested in this method you use have you tried to train him/her to do other things and if so have you had any success with it? I hand raise a lot of birds and would be interested in trying your method with some of the cockatiels I breed and hand raise.

Hmm no i havent trained him to do much else. The poop was the biggest factor for me cos we have carpeted floors!, so i really wanted to try and control that as much as possible. I'm sure it would work with cockatiels as well, or any bird. its just really geting them used to going in that certain spot initially. if we're in my room but on my bed he will indicate to me he wants to go and hold it when i pick him up to put him over there. thats only if i get to him quick enough though haha. if i take too long he does it anyway! Im sure i could get him to be perfectly potty trained if i spent a lot of time with him on it!

If you just google "potty train bird" it comes up with so many pages...heres one www.takoda-aviary.com/potty_training.htmI've pretty much trained my birds the way melzawelza has. My sun conure though, hasn't pooped on me at all since i got him. I dont know if this is his natural instinct, or if he was trained to do it. It is really easy...just like all training it needs positive reinforcement. Although your never supposed to give your bird a food reward for 'doing poos' as people have found the bird starts to strain to have a poop in order to get food Im gonna have to put my video of me getting my quaker to stack cups, fetch, spin and wave someday. I like to show of his cute little tricks. And I've found that training my bird has really strengthened our bond. He actually gets excited to do them!

I have trained skye sort of to poo on cue. I just kept saying YUK every time she did a poo and would say DO A YUK and one day I had her on my shoulder and put her back on her stand and said DO A YUK........not expecting anything.........but she did. Obviously I was so excited that I yelled at hubby to come watch this. LOL so 10 mins later we repeated it and .......... yes she did it again. Most times when she has been out for a while and if I put her on her stand and ask DO A YUK she will do it.
