Hi All, this weather is horrible!!! My place will be at least 40 today. My poor birds are turning into BBQ chooks. What does everyone do for their birds in this heat? I have been putting a fine mist hose on in the avo when i get home and letting them get wet. The seem to enjoy it and immediatly 'come back to life' and chew their perches. I wanted to put a 'bath' in for them but had nothing shallow enough so will purchase on the way home today. Any suggestions? Rotten weather....bring back winter or at least SPRING! Cheers, Sal.

Yep hot here today too Sal I also mist the birds during the day,. but as we are not permitted to use the hoses because of water restrictions I use one of those misting bottles and just like you said the birds love it. Just a word of warning on using the hose, make sure the water is running cold before you put it on the birds, as you know the water that is already in the hose can be almost boiling. John

Thanks John, I am on tank water so using a hose is up to me....mind you i don't mind using the water for a good cause. I use the hot water coming out first to wash the bottom of the aviary or put into buckets to use for same the next day...can't waste a drop! The mist idea is good will make purchase on the way home. Cheers, Sal.

The open flight area in all of my aviaries is covered with UV resistant sheeting and I also have a shade cloth frame that I place over the top of the aviary every summer, this drops the tempreture inside the aviary by at least 10 degrees on hot days.

I know this question was asked a while ago butbetter late than never..! I use pot plant saucers as baths for my birds. I recently purchased some from Woolworths that are made by Yates and are very strong. I got on that is about 12" in diameter and it has a ridge around the bottom of the saucer on the inside to prevent them slipping as well. The birds love it! You could also put some sand in the bottom to help make it less slippery for them as well! Jo-Anne

Hi Guys, are you using the ceramic or plastic ones? I bought my birds a kitty litter tray and have put a rock in it for them to stand on. The little beasts love it but they are chewing the plastic(i think they want waterfalls) so i have taken it out. I am worried about them swallowing plastic bits. Think i will try the ceramic ones. It is so lovely to watch they playing in the water. Mind you Molly totally soakes herself in the water and looks so pathetic afterwards! I have a huge breeze-way in my avairy which seems to help with the heat. Will try the shade cloth idea though. I have also vents at the peak of both ends of the avairy which has made them a lot cooler in summer. Sal.

The ones I use are not plastic or ceramic they are some other material that the birds can't chew, very much like ceramic in texture but a lot lighter. They make great bathing dishes and the and hold 4 ltrs comfortably.

The ones I use are plastic but a lot thicker than the usual ones you see. The top edge of the sides is actually folded over so there is no actual edge for them to chew. If you look for the Yates brand on them you will find they are much stronger and less likely to be chewed than the real cheap ones. I have about an inch or 2 of water in them and the birds love it. I have shade a cloth 'patio' that I afixed to the front of the aviaries. Before I go to work I hose down the aviaries including the aviary floor. As any breeze passes through it cools the air down. Also many of the birds I keep dig holes and lay in the cool sand when it is hot. I hang fresh branches in all the aviaries throughout summer as this seems to cool the birds down. Although it can get quite humid. I have heard that putting mulch around the aviary permimeters or lawn and wetting it in the morning will also help to keep the air tempreture down, especially if it is covered. I am considering doing this this year. I have certainly noticed when I visit other people's aviaries, that have plants and or lawn around the aviary seems alot cooler than concreate or sand, probably because there is no reflection off these surfaces. I feel so sorry for our birds on really hot days, I've often rushed home from work at lunch time to check on them! Such a worry-wort! - Claire
