A freind has a pair of galahs and the female has lost all its tail feathers and most of its body feathers, now the male is losing his tail feathers also, they have a great diet and he is going to spray them incase it is lice, It is extreamly hot at the moment and a lot of birds are moulting heavily but these are pretty extream. any advise would be appreciated, he is a couple of hours drive away from a vet so he wants to try other ideas first.

Argghhh!! Possibly Beak & Feather!
Quarantine them straight away and get them to a vet!! There's a big problem with increased cases of PB&F in wild cockatoos being reported by wildlife carers both in the east and in WA.
I might be jumping to the wrong conclusion, but its better to be safe than sorry, at least until he gets them checked out by a vet.

He's quarrantining the just incase, he is also trying them on cooked mutton fat some breeder told him the are lacking in fatty acids, sounds a bit odd to me I've never heard of this remedy. I've also given him Dr Rob Marshalls number as he will do a free consult over the phone if he sends him samples and photos.

Ill go with the B&F disease even if it is what the breeder said I would still get them to a vet in a hurry I'm not too sure about the mutton fat it sounds a bit extreem to me. Keep us informed of what is happening with them Kim lets hope it isnt serious.

This is such a horrible disease. I hate to hear of or see any birds with it. On the off chance that it is something missing in the diet...i haven't heard of the mutton thing but i regularly feed my birds cooked chicken bones. I leave a little of the meat/fat on and freeze the bones untill needed. It took some of my birds a little while to figure out what to do with them but now they LOVE them. The chew the ends and split them open to get the marrow out. I have Gangs and this is really essential for their health. Perhaps as galahs are simillar they too require the amino acids and protein. You can also give pretty much any kinds of bone to the birds. I have given chop bones, ribs etc as well. It is part of the natural diet as these birds often feed on sparrows, mice etc. I have heard that you can feed the bones raw as well but i usually feed myself as well!! ;D Good luck and i HOPE it turns out to dietry.
