We went to the wildlife carers house today to pick up a baby magpie and I came home with a female galah with a broken wing as well as the little maggie. I don't know how old she is although she seems reasonably young. I don't know how long ago her wing was broken but I think it has been like that for a little while. I'll post some pics soon.

That's fantastic news Jules has the galah been treated for the broken wing? and if it fully recovers will you release it back into the wild?

The wing appears to be healed but I don't think it was treated and set as it sits a bit too low so she will be staying with me for good. She can get around pretty well but can't fly properly.

Poor little bird. If you can sex her by her eyes then she is not a baby. Does she have any greyish look about her in her pink feathers. Baby galahs have a lot more greyish in their pink feathers than adults. When I got Bo she was a lot greyer than an adult and the babies I see around here are also a lot greyer than the adults. I just can't rightly remember when she changed colour. Probably with her first molt.

I can't see any grey through the pink so she must have had at least one moult although she won't let me close yet. She's pretty quiet and doesn't hiss when I go into the aviary to change water and food so I hope that's a good sign.. I was only going by what the carer said. Do the girls talk? Any other info would be good as I've never kept a galah before. Oh, by the way I've called her Scarlet.

Nice name ;D My Bo was a girl.............named her after a good looking guy on "days of our drearys" LOL. When I named her, I did not know whether she was a girl or boy, because she had dark eyes and was very grey. when they mature the girls eyes go an orange/brown colour and the boys are still dark.I do not watch that show either anymore.........thank goodness, you could miss it for a year and still not miss a thing. LOL I am into Dr phil now. ;D
Bo was not a good talker, but when younger could say a few words, but for some reason stopped talking except for "hello". I saw a male galah who imitated the human voice almost perfectly around the same time when Bo was a baby.
When pets they do make lovely pets, Bo was just lovely, she loved to be loved and patted, and absolutely loved male humans. I do not know how she knew the difference but she did. she knew I was Mum, but she would flirt and dance and beg to go to any man that was around...........even if the wife was with them ;D

LOL, they are such characters. Scarlet seems fairly placid at the moment but that just may be a settling in thing, I'm not sure. What sort of cage/aviary did you keep Bo in?

For a long time until I read differently, she was in a normal "cockatoo cage" and allowed to roam free around the yard daily (she was clipped), then we got a bigger hexagonal aviary and she was allowed in it for a while, then I got a bargain off ebay and she went into that cage (my alexandrine is in that one now). It can be bought brand new from the warehouse for around $200........my son bought one for his bird (alexandrine also). my beautiful Bo - RIP this is Bo again, you can see her cage behind her. Not a good shot. Excuse the messy beak we had spagetti for dinner. ;D This is her cage with my alexandrine in it

She's doing really well, thanks for asking. When I go into her aviary she climbs the wire and when strangers come over she does the same thing but every day I sit out by her aviary and read for a couple of hours, while I'm there I talk to her. She looks at me when I talk to her and even cocks her head to the side like she's listening.LOL She is now coming to the end of the perch closest to where I'm sitting so she's only a couple of feet away from me, she preens lots while being near me and even has little naps sometimes. She also gets down onto the floor and spends 10 or 15 minutes walking around and eating. She must be feeling comfortable around me. Here's a pic of her, taken just after I got her home so I had to take it from a distance.

Nice bird, looks like my Bo . She is definetly not a baby.............young maybe but not a baby. Keep up the good work, she just might decide she wants your company and enjoy being patted by you eventually. ;D They are pretty birds.

I think that along with Princess Parrots I love Galah's the most they are just the best pets you can find.
