Our princess has exhibited some odd behaviour. It looks like he is dry retching, doesn't vomit or anything. I wondered if it was moult from our cockatiel irritating him - any suggestions. He has only done it 2 or 3 occassions but it is quite alarming. Last time he did it he did it over and over about 10 times. He doesn't appear distressed but I'd like to know whether I should be taking him to the vet.

how old is he??? Is it possible he is trying to talk??? Without actually seeing it, I have noticed with some of my birds when they are trying to talk they actually stretch their mouths/beaks......................maybe it is not learning to talk (I thought it was for all these years) maybe it is just a yawn. Is he making any noises when he does it??? That is the first thing that came to my mind.
Is everything else about him ok??? His droppings normal, he eating normal etc etc

Hi, We think he's about 2yrs. He does talk a bit, pretty vocal most of the time. Still eating normally, droppings seem ok, nothing unusual. He does try and "feed" me sometimes which looks quite different, so I recognise it's not that. I'm baffled - he seems ok afterwards, but I want to be sure he's ok. Might visit the vet to reassure myself anyway. Really appreciate your feedback.

Was he being vocal at the time this started to happen and did he have his eyes pinned. It may be a display. He may have also had something caught like some seed that he was dislodging. I do hope he is ok

Hi AW, No he wasn't being voacl at the time, just snoozing on my knee. He had finished eating some time previously, still....could have had something still irritating him. He's been fine since then....it's just because he's done it on more than one occassion I wondered if anyone else had struck it. Thanks.

If he was having a "nap" then maybe he was just yawning like we do when we are tired? Maybe??? I see my birds stretching their beaks and necks.

Perhaps, but I don't think so.....he was doing this action repeatedly (about 7 or 8 times) I've seen him yawn before :-/and it doesn't look so....deliberate (best word to describe it) - remains a mystery. . He was doing it on Friday or Saturday night but he seems fine ever since. Was playing silly buggars with me this morning so he can't be feeling too poorly.

well if he continues and you are worried about it, it might pay to get him checked to make sure he has not got something stuck in his throat. But he sounds ok to me................although it is hard to say when I cannot see him

Sounds very much like he is stretching his crop Nothing to worry about, but if it is worrying you I take him to your vet.

Yeah I've had heaps of birds do that... mainly my budgies do it very frequently. I still don't know what it's all about but they never show signs of illness at that time.

Now that you say that AW, it has been a lot with my budgies too, but i always thought they were trying to talk..............can't remember why I thought that, probably read it somewhere 30 years ago. But my other birds have done it to from time to time.
