you would have to make sure the wire is zinc free and something were the wholes arnt to big that the bird can get its head through and potentially hurt its self.

Cheers Hi Wilsta, all the cages /aviaries I have built I have purchased the wire form Bunnings in a roll, there are various gauges of wire and they are ideal for cages and aviaries. You will have treat the wire before you put birds in and if you wash it with white vinegar and leave it for 48 hours before you add the birds you should be okay, any lumps of zinc you find on the wire cut off with a pair of side cutters and treat again with the vinegar solution and you should be fine. this may sound like a stupid question but what does the vinegar do to the zinc?

this may sound like a stupid question but what does the vinegar do to the zinc? The vinegar neutralise's the zinc so it is no longer harmful to the birds, if you don't treat the wire your birds will finish up with zinc poisoning and will drop like flies. John

I had a look at the wire at bunnings today- not a bad selection of wire to choose from -- at a reasonable price. I want to build an aviary rather than buy one.

I get my wire from Miter Ten, no doubt the same brands, and I have no problems with it at all.

Do you run to a Metalcorp or similar in Sydney? I'm sure they'd be cheaper
