On Wednesday morning, I fed five of the six baby cockatiels. The other little hen was sitting with her back to me, on the perch, in their cage. She was quiet, but otherwise looked fine. So, I let her be, and didn't feed her.
They're seven weeks old now, so it seemed reasonably normal for her to refuse feeding.
I had to go out with my husband, and when we got back after a couple of hours, I checked on them, and that she was dead on the bottom of the cage.
I still have no idea why. I've been covering them, and they've been eating really well etc..
Well, that was bad enough, but later in the day, when I went and gave my other, outdoor birds some vegetables, I found Nibble dead on the bottom of her cage as well.
She's my Dutch blue lovebird hen, who shared a cage with Nifty, who happens to also be a hen. Nifty is still fine, thank goodness.
I've since taken Nifty out of that enclosure, and relocated her to a smaller, warmer cage. She's a little confused, but she's doing ok.
Nibble was always a really energetic bird, to the point that every time I opened the cage door, I'd have to almost throw the food in there, before she tried to eat me.
Maybe, I hadn't cleaned the cage out well enough, or something. I just don't know.
The little cockatiel 7 weeks old) who's been sick is in isolation, and he's staying that way till I absolutely know he's ok. I've had him away from the others for about one week now.
He's still eating ok. Not a lot at a time, but he's still alive. At this stage, I find that a bonus.
I'm cleaning out their cages at least once a day, sometimes more often, as needed. Plus, I'm making sure they're warm. We live near the water, so it gets farily cold here.
So, I'm holding my breath, and hoping nothing else goes amiss. It's been a bad week.
