Squee took a quick turn for the worse recently. He was taken into the vet this morning after and he said it looked like the virus had moved to his brain, and that even if they could do anything for him he'd probably not regain much control of movement, so it was decided to let him go.
He was my precious baby and I don't know what I'll do without him.

Thank you for the kind thoughts, it means a lot to me. I knew in my heart that he wouldn't live long with the virus - each time he had a trip to the vet he would come back not quite as healthy and not quite as happy, but I thought we'd have a little longer than this. He was still such a bright and cheery boy.

RIP little fellow. He had PBFD didn't he? Well he is flying free now with no pain and fully feathered.

Yes Tracey, he had PBFD. One of the positives is he still had some feathering and a lot of down - he was only just starting to come up with a couple of bald patches so he still looked like my Squee, if that makes sense.
I'm sort of alternating between feeling miserable and very clucky at the moment - empty cage syndrome, it is. Very aware that I'm just missing having a bird as person-oriented as he was though, so I've decided no new birds for a month - hopefully after that if I do come across a special bird I'll be wanting it for it's own personality not as a replacement for him.

Nothing wrong with wanting a new companion Farseeker......if it helps with the healing process. Just don't rush into it or you just might not get what you are looking for. Good luck when you do look for a new companion.

I'm very aware that I probably wouldn't be getting one for the right reasons within that timeframe though - I'm pretty impulsive, which in some cases is a good thing (looking after Squee in the first case was an impulsive decision) but not so much in this. I was thinking if I did get another bird a cockatiel would be a good choice since I read somewhere that they don't get PBFD for some reason, but I've done a bit of research since then and there are recorded cases of it - figure two on this site is interesting though, in terms of disease distribution and species.

No I didn't mean anything about time.......just dont rush into anything (that is always my advice, just ask my best friend when it comes to trying to find a life partner). Sometimes a new companion can help to heal........just make sure it is what you are looking for..........that is all I meant by that. ;D What do you mean by figure two on this site??? Is there something I should be reading or something (sorry sometimes I am just a tad slow. LOL......not blonde or anything. LOL)

The number of cases by species in that pie chart - lorikeets are so small there, and cockatiels non-existant in that study. It's just interesting to see the spread, I suppose.

poor squee is gone, that makes me sorrow , i love lorriquets . But if you take another companion does not forget all to disinfect, because the virus can remain very a long time. You tell cokatiel cannot have pbfd, here somes ones have cokatiels with pbfd. Do you have in australia "interferon" some one inject interferon to boust the imunitary defens. Amicalement.
