On Friday afternoon, I took the babies over to visit Farseeker and her fids. Sora and Anath hit it off (Akira got a little jealous, poor baby), and they all hung around quite happily for a few hours. We live about ten minutes away from each other by car, but there are a couple of very steep hills in between, so I simply put the babies in a cardboard box with a soft shirt on the bottom and taxi'd over.
Friday night I realised I was locked out of the house (my keys have gone walkabout and my housemate left early) so they stayed the night. I went back on Saturday afternoon after work to pick them up, and was sitting on the verandah calling a taxi (Akira snuggled up and went to sleep inside my shirt as soon as I opened his cage) when Sora started screaming and flapping around inside the box. He'd caught his toenail inside a button and panicked.
Scared he'd hurt himself, I opened it straight up and extracted his toe. He seemed all right, so I went to close the box again, but as soon as I took my hand out to do it he took off -straight over the balcony and around the corner towards the backyard. I took off after him, but by the time I got around the corner, I couldn't see him anywhere.
I searched, and called, and Akira called his "HAY! WHERE ARE YOU!" call three or four times, but there was no answer, and he always, always answers Akira.
It's been four days now, with no sign. He was so sweet natured, and so tame, and so funny, and there's very little chance that I'll ever see him again.
Five months to the day between when he came home, and when he flew away.
I should have been more careful, and I'm so, so sorry. I hope that someone found you, and you're safe and happy somewhere. I miss you.
