Well what a shocking weekend...and Monday started even worse.
I have since Friday lost 8 of the Boxing Day kids due to death or having to cull...they have been so sick and I don't understand it at all.
Could be any number of things but I have 2 major ideas atm with 1 really sticking out.
Had to cull 4 this morning and prob another 2 before the day is out....poor babies, but I can't watch them suffer.
Breaking my heart having to do this to babies that are not even a month old....1st time I have lost so many.
I am so careful about taking illness out of my place and bringing it in...but it seems just 1 little slip can and does have a such a huge impact.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE everyone take ALL the precautions that should be taken AND never slip up.......this is a lesson I will never forget and it is all because I showed someone/let them handle my babies.........so so stupid!!
I don't care how stupid you think your quarantine rules are...STICK to them like super glue!!!
RIP babies and I am sorry I let you down.

oh Sebastion that is so sad ........... what do you think your babies died from? I thought chooks were pretty resiliant.

I'm so sorry to hear this Sebastion. It is a bit of a wake up call to the rest of us. I know I can be pretty slack with quarantine at times. Just remember, things happen and sometimes it doesn't matter how cautious we are.

Tracey I am not 100% sure but I have a feeling it might be Coccidious (spelling). Stupid stipud me just let a poultry friend (who has plenty of chooks ie TONS) wanted to see my Belgian babies as they are from his lines..........
F&*($* IDIOT!!!
I have NEVER allowed anyone that owns poultry near my babies before EVER and I always strip down at the door and clothes in the washing machine and showered etc etc, shoes in foot bath on way through front door beffore going near any of my birds.
This ONE time and only once went through my side gate as had stuff to go straight through to the yard and WHAM-O!!
Just have to hope that all the babies that hatched over the weekend are ok now.......mortality is high with cocci so I am not going to treat as it is so far contained to one room and will cull as required, only 9 babies left out of 17..........is just so heart-breaking after watching these poor little beggars hatch and get this far.
Thankfully poultry and birds don't carry the same cocci as each other and all my older birds are immune enough to not contract it (I hope).

That's awful Seb, I hate seeing babies sick. I've had budgies with the disease and it is terrible, although you can get medicine for it.

Oh Sebastion I'm very sorry to hear this it would be heartbreaking having to do that yourself, you are very brave I wouldn't be able too. Best of Luck for your meeting re job this arvo, try and concentrate on the positive and it can be good to be busy On a technical note, most chick starter has antibiotics for coccidiosis in it so unless you have had a really bad case maybe it's something worse like Mareks? (Marek's can't be treated unless you vaccinate at day old) I dunno

Well thankfully no more deaths or culls overnight....1 still not looking to crash hot but it is eating and I presume therefore drinking so with luck I have managed to cull/lost the worst of the worst....well for now anyway, time will tell on this one I think. And thanks so much everyone. Culling doesn't really bug me that much (I have to do the unwanted roosters that don't sell) but doing babies just kills me and when it is so many in 1 day it is even worse. Have to be pretty tough when you breed poultry, this lot just looked like the best of the season and therefore none were going to be sold until around Nov/Dec....even the roo's were going to stay. Ohh well when you breed you have to take the good with the bad I suppose. All the hugs really helped though thanks guys.

"S" we can all come up with platitudes and philosophic sayings but nothing matches that feeling of loosing baby birds, I will say that we all feel your pain and mourn with you ........chin up old mate.

I am sorry to hear about your heavy losses Seb. I know I am showing my ignorance, but can anyone explain the signs & symptoms? I have never had flash poultry, but have bought myself & the grand kids some Pekings ( as flash as I am likely to own) & have never worried about diseases like this, but if gets to the birds I'll be really upset
